My Champion 600 kind of "farts" with bassy notes with high output pickups. I am not sure if this is normal. The notes come out but they sound "farty".

I have had it for a few years and used it less than 10 times, but I think that someone plugged a bass into it a few years ago at a party. (But I am not sure because it was while I was on a beer run and the idiots left at the party told me this as an anecdote. I hadn't actually used it in ages until a couple weeks ago when I pulled it out again.) I can't remember if it sounded like this when I bought it or not.

I saw a video somewhere with billy Gibbons playing guitar with a similar amp (at Kid Rock's house!??!) and it sounded really farty too.

Anyone else with a similar issue?

If it is not normal, tips on things to check and/or ways to repair it would be great.

Thanks

Hi katintokyo,

That sounds normal for the stock amp. The grill "cloth" is responsible for a large part of the farty sound. Many people change the cloth and get much better sound. Using the low input, lower volume and single coils will minimize the problem. The next step to improve the sound would be a better speaker.

Maybe not enough hours on the speaker yet to break it in. Mine sounded much better after about 30 hours. Not clear on what a "farty" speaker sounds like.

I have owned 3 of these now. I have modded 2 of them. IMO, the grill cloth has nothing to do with the farty bass notes. It's the speaker size and the circuit. All of mine did that, even after changing the grill cloth. Even after putting in new speakers (a 6" alnico weber in one, an 8" tone tubby alnico in another), the bass still farted out with higher output pickups and higher volume settings.

On the newest one, I have a lower output tube in V1 (ECC832), the 8" tone tubby, and I installed a switch to go from the stock tone stack to tone stack bypass (no tone stack). The bass notes still flub, no matter what, when the volume gets high enough.

Just don't turn it up that loud. Seriously. IMO, this amp shines on cleans and "slightly dirty" sounds anyway... on those cranked nirvana-garage-rock tones, it sounds like crap.

I have only owned two, modded one with burlap for grill cloth, and a Weber Signature 6 speaker, and it was way less farty, but still couldn't quite handle hum-buckers into the high input.

Lots of useful info in this thread:
