Hi all,

I've purchased recently an EVH5153 amp. I plugged my old Rocktron Intellifex in the FXLoop and I can't get a decent input level into the multifx. I have to turn the up very loud just to see the first green led indicator flashing.

I read somwehere that the SEND output in the EVH is instrument level (good for pedals) so it won't wotk properly with LINE level multifx (almost all in the market). Is that true, I cant understand why manufacturing an amp that cant work with multifx units.

Cheers

MutiFX units are line level compatible, and they have level adjustments to get the signal right whereas pedals don't.
If the amp is putting out line level, then it'll be fine for your unit. Your FX unit should have input level adjustment to bring the signal up or down as needed.
If you have the LTD model it can be adjusted from -12db to +12db, that's a good amount of signal level control.

You have an input level adjuster. Start by setting output level to it's mid point.
Also, make sure your "reference level" is set to +4db, as you're using it in the effects loop.
You shouldn't have to crank the amp volume to drive the effect send.
I just looked it up and your amp doesn't have a level adjustable effects loop, so you'll just use your FX unit to get the input and output levels set correctly.

Start with the FX out set to it's mid point.
Then adjust FX input at a bit above it's lowest level.
Start playing.
As you play watch the FX input level indicator LED's. Adjust the FX input level until you get a good signal level, avoiding clipping, which is indicated by the clip LED.

Once the input level is set properly make sure to adjust the FX out as needed.
You will have a good level in and out when the amp volume is the same with the effects turned on or off.
If the amps volume drops, then your FX out may be too low.
If the amps volume increases, then your FX out may be too high.
This of course depends on first getting the input level to the FX unit correct.
You're looking for balance/unity.

The other thing you might have to do is set the FX unit to "effects only", if your unit has that feature.
This will take out the original signal and not output back into the amp, only the "wet" effect will be sent back into the amp.

Many EVH 5150/5153 owners claim the effects loop sucks, but more say it works just fine. So it's likely a matter of setting levels correctly.
You should also try different forums where this amp is readily used and discussed.
Fender does now own EVH, but seems it's more of a 'hands off' product line as it's not listed on the Fender's website.
Good luck. :)

Rocktron Input's at +12db
EVH support say it is Line level.

It sounds ok at rehearsing volume (10-11 oclock) (though leads dont even flash) but sometimes FOH ask to turn down the amp so he can handle the sound through PA. That day I may hav problems
