I have a fender Champion 600 - it's not working. It took a pounding one night when I loaned it to a band that overloaded it repeatedly for a long time till it was dead. While it turned on, it made no noise. I replaced the valves and now I get a noise, but it is just "noise" when the input signal is loud enough to make the noise.

Thats the noise coming direct out of the amp output before it goes to the speaker. It makes the same noise if I connect the speaker, so I'm pretty sure the speaker is still intact.

Does anyone have any ideas or pointers before I get a multimeter and schematic out?

That ^

And for future reference, don't use a tube amp with no speaker connected. :wink:

Out of interest, why shouldn't I use a tube amp with no speaker connected? I output it into an audio interface and recorded it into pro tools.

A tube amp needs a minimum impedance connected to the output transformer while operating, in order to keep the OT from blowing. This minimum impedance is usually in the range of zero to sixteen ohms. The speaker out from a tube amp is not made for an interface or recording device, nor should the amp be connected to anything other than a speaker(s) or similar resistive load.

Ah - okay - lesson learned. I was just trying to rule out the speaker being blown.

Most of Fender amp use a output speaker jack with ground shorting contact if no speaker is plug on O T. Champion 600 have it .

This shorting contact make a load for the OT. This help to save the Output Transformer and output Power tubes . It is a kind of " emergency " security , not a way to use the amp .

Alway plug a speaker or any good load .

You need to open the amp and check with something burn , resistors , printed circuit ...

If you do not see anything , some voltage reading ; be carefull , tube amp have lethal voltage that ca kill you.

Post picture of the circuit

Schematic is here ;

Just curious as to how it was over-loaded. I have a "600" but I don't understand how it could be overloaded.

I do sound in a little venue sometimes, and I was asked at the last minute if I could bring down an amp for one of the bands. I was cycling to the gig, so the 600 made more sense than any of my other amps, so I told the guy using it to leave it at 8, and I'd put an SM57 in front of it and put it through the monitors and PA. He wasn't best pleased cos he thought the free amp loan should have been a bigger amp - I can only presume cos his $@!&# was really small. Everything went fine during the soundcheck.

Once they started their set, he immediately walked on stage - turned it up to 12 and was then feeding it from a pretty heavy sound from a multi effects unit. It cut out 2/3rds of the way through their set. There was very little I could do from the back of the room.

I don't do "gear favours" any more.
