Hi,
I have a new British voiced speaker that arrives today that is eventually going into a 112 ext cab but I still need a traditional US voiced speaker for my 68CDRR. I was thinking of a Weber 12F150 or 12A150 until I read a lot of good things about the WGS G12c and G12c/s. I'm looking for a nice true Fender sound at moderate to household volumes (4 or max 5 on dial). I get my crunch from pedals and my dog runs away when the amp gets too loud...

Would love to hear from some WGS owners out there especially anyone who has owned both G12s and the Weber 12F150 and Alnico 'equivalents'.

Thanks!

:D

I have numerous WGS speakers in my Fender amps.

Not much experience with Weber's but WGS are my favorite at this time.

American of British voiced, they all work fine ...

Can't go wrong with either one. Both are fine speakers. The Weber might be a skosh better, but really a matter of taste and $$...Flip a coin!

I'm a huge Weber fan. I have a 12A125A in my 5e3 clone and a Sig 8 in my 74 Champ and find them to be amazing speakers. Nice tight bottom end and singing highs. I've been thinking of trying some in my Egnater gig.

I've got the same speaker in my 5E3 and it might be the finest speaker I've ever heard.

I've also got 10A125's and 10F150's in my 59 Bassman and CVR. Plus an 8A125 in my 73 Champ. All of them are fantastic.

I have a Twin Reverb Reissue in a head cabinet and am using a 4 ohm Eminence Texas Heat in a 12" extension cab. Sounds awesome. It's one of Eminence's American voiced speakers and it comes in 4, 8, and 16 ohm versions, all handle up to 150W.

Ive had a new Weber 12F150 in a custom cab for a few days now. I love this speaker and it isn't even broken in yet. Thanks so much to everyone who suggested it to me!

Hi all,

Pondering Weber vs WGS. Have used Webers in the past, and have been happy with them, but frankly, am a bit put off by their unwillingness to post any specs whatsoever, or sound clips for every model (none for the models I'm considering). I KNOW they will provide useful advice, but would appreciate the option of analyzing specs for myself. In any case:

Amp: Blackfaced Super Reverb with all Mercury transformers, and a few special mods (KT66 tubes, 6G5-A tone stack on 'normal' channel), in a 2X12 cabinet. Guitar: modified Tele deluxe with 2 firebird pickups and varitone circuit. Styles: not much metal, but pretty much everything else.

At one point I had the amp fitted with a Celestifon G12H-100 (4-ohm) and a vintage Altec Lansing 417 (8-ohm) and absolutely loved the combination, but wasn't comfortable with the oddball impedance mismatch. At the moment, I have that G12H-100 paired up with a 4-ohm Celestion G12-65AVT (Chinese, from a solid-state Marshall) and the sound is absolutely mediocre.

Figured I'd try pairing the G12H-100 with a 4-ohm alnico in the hopes of recapturing that sound that I loved. If it doesn't work out I can always just add another alnico.

Based on my satisfaction with the Altec, my first inclination is to go with a Weber Alnico California, probably with a paper dustcap, but I'm a bit uneasy about their "ceramic boosted" alnico, and wonder whether that will diminish the pure alnico character. Also, as mentioned above, no specs and no sound samples for that speaker (at least not the alnico version.)

Other possibilities are the WGS" G12A alnico, and the 100W WGS Blackhawk HP alnico. I was nominally leaning toward an 'American voiced' speaker to balance the British sounding Celestion, but the Blackhawk is described as resembling an EV SRO, which I have always liked, and never thought of as overly British in character. Also, the 99.26 db SPL seems like a better balance with the Celestion's 99db, vs the G12A's 96db.

Also, based on the sound clips, I think I prefer the sound of the Blackhawk.

Again, with no specs and no sound clips it's difficult to compare the California 12, and the qualitative descriptions I've read about it are so contradictory (not for overdrive, great for overdrive, piercing, smooth ....) as to be virtually meaningless.

I suspect any of these choices will sound great, and have always been happy with Weber's service, but get a bit annoyed at the 'pig in a poke' nature of their descriptions.

Anyway, I'm particularly interested in first-hand experiences with those three alnico models, and if anyone's used them paired with a ceramic, that would be all the better.

Thanks,

Joe

IMO, with the selections your considering- it doesn't really matter that much. With such highly efficient speakers and overrated wattages for the amplifiers output, the speakers individual nuance will be minimal. It sounds to me like your looking at a great clean sound w/o much speaker distortion.
Just my 2 cents, I would be looking at max 50 watt speakers for a 2x12 cabinet SR and would think if you want some speaker distortion 40 watts might be a better choice.

Weber gets my vote. I guess it's just a personal preference thing.

I haven’t posted In a really long time and when I saw myself on the post I knew it was old. It’s from 2014, but I’m still a Weber fan.

I guess the OP didn't mind doing some digging, so I replied but he likely wont be back.

I also have a couple Weber's and have been nothing but impressed w/ the quality and service folks there, the 12A125 in my TV deluxe and a 12F150 in my DRRI. I haven't tried the Warehouse brand but it could probably be the next best choice as I haven't heard of any issues w/ them either.

I have had exactly one experience with WGS.
It was short.
Nuf sed.

Both make really good speakers IMO, but the Weber 12A150 is the best speaker I’ve ever used for my taste.
