Hi guys,
I'm new here, and i need a little help with a slight dilemma i have. ATM i have a Fender Mustang 2 amp which i use all the time, and i run two gain pedals into this, an overdrive and a distortion. I love the sound i get, but i am starting to feel the lack of tubes, so i am looking at upgrading to a new amp. My budget is under £600 (roughly $1000), used is fine although needs to be UK power, not USA, and i don't need more than 50 watts, 40 is preferable.

In my view (i know this will cause disagreement but screw it) an amp is a platform upon which i want to build my sound; i want an amp that will stay clean at high volumes but will take pedals well. I appreciate that tube amps are loved for their distortion, and if i drive it right i know with my setup i can get an awesome sound, so i need something that has great cleans but also takes pedals really well. Obviously fender would be my first choice, love their clean sound, but also other brands would be appreciated (if thats allowed on here... as i say, i'm new).

Also, if you know of any good 3 channel tube amps (clean, crunch and lead) in a similar price range suggestions are appreciated; if the amp can do what the pedals can then i'd be happy to replace the pedals.

Cheers

Try a SuperSonic 60. Never mind the extra 20 watts. You wanted clean. Try a Super Reverb. You should be able to find either in the used market in your budget.

+1

I don't know what prices in the secondary market are like in the UK but the SRRI would definitely fulfill the other desired parameters.

Most 40/50 watt tube amps seem to break up a little at high volumes. If you need high volume cleans, you might want to look at something a little more powerful.

In addition to the great choices already named above, I'd take a look at a Hot Rod Deville (60 watt amp). It has clean headroom to spare, and takes pedals nicely.

Ok thanks guys, all of those look great! A used Super reverb or super sonic is about the same as a new Hot rod deville over here, so which of these is better in your opinion?
Cheers :)

Super Reverb
SuperSonic 60
In that order
That's if clean is all you care about.
If you want an amp that does both clean and crunchy reverse the order.

One factor for me would be weight. From lightest to heaviest:

HOT ROD DEVILLE™ 410 III
Amplifier Weight: 50 lbs. (22.7 kg)

HOT ROD DEVILLE™ 212 III
Amplifier Weight: 53.5 lbs. (24.26 kg)

SUPER-SONIC™ 60 COMBO
Amplifier Weight: 54 lbs. (24.5 kg)

'65 SUPER REVERB®
Amplifier Weight: 65 lbs. (29.48 kg)

I also like to have an effects loop:

Has effects loop:
HOT ROD DEVILLE™ 410 III
HOT ROD DEVILLE™ 212 III
SUPER-SONIC™ 60 COMBO

Doesn't have effects loop:
'65 SUPER REVERB®

In terms of speakers, I personally like the 410 configuration for a 'punchier' sound. Here's what they all have:

HOT ROD DEVILLE™ 410 III
Speaker: Four - 10" Fender® Special Design Eminence®

HOT ROD DEVILLE™ 212 III
Speaker: Two - 12" Celestion® G12P-80

SUPER-SONIC™ 60 COMBO
Speaker: One - 12" Celestion® Vintage 30

'65 SUPER REVERB®
Speaker: Four - 10" Jensen® P10R with Alnico Magnet

When it comes to sparkly gorgeous Fender clean tone, it's hard to beat the SUPER REVERB. That's the sound as far as I'm concerned. And it seems the SUPER amps are more rugged and well put together (going by the opinions here on the forum). But for all practical purposes, I'd lean toward the HOT ROD DEVILLE 410. The effects loop is important to me, and an extra 15 lbs in weight can make a big difference if you gig often.

That's just one opinion based on my needs. But with great amps like these, you can hardly go wrong.

I have a Hot Rod Deville with 4x10s... It roars and it takes pedals just fine.

The 4x10s (IMO) did sound better than the 2x12s.. the 10s give it more of a focused punch.

not a lot of fun to move, but plenty of "beanage"

Once you play the Super Reverb...you won't care about that effects loop or the weight! They're Tone Machines!

Indeed they are!

My first new Fender amp was a '67 silverface SR and I'll always rue the day that I traded it in.

I'd definitely support this opinion, if you're still young enough to hoist it, these amps have the best sound I've ever heard.

well since the only effect i'd have in the effects loop would be a delay, and my drive is coming from pedals not the amp, a loop isn't all that important to me :)

can people explain a little more about the difference in sound between 10" and 12" speaker please? Sounds like i will be looking at either the Hot Rod Deville or the Super Reverb...

"Good sounding 10" speakers can deliver a fast, punchy sound at wider listening angles with reduced “boom” on small stages. They can offer increased portability, reduced cost and the ability to push your amp into overdrive at reasonable levels without having drumsticks aimed at the back of your head. A well-designed 15" speaker can move more air so you can gig those wonderful little valve amps. The vocal range can be creamier, with extended low end and lots of detail and harmonic complexity, giving surprising richness to some otherwise scratchy-sounding guitar and amp combinations."

From: http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/D ... lly_Matter

"10 inch speaker - more responsive (faster), more midrange and highs, overall tighter tone.

12 inch speaker - more lower end, a little slower in response, more open tone.

Those are generalizations, but apply in most cases regardless of cab size or type."
