Replace those $@!&#* JJ preamps right away! My 68 twin is 8 months old now runs like a champ. My old blues deluxe ran like a champ for year then I traded it in. The deluxes I played at the store were just fine its the dam shipping from mexico that tears things up.

Now you know why I don't own any amps made after 1984! It is both sad and maddening that Fender can't seem to get these amps right. They just don't have that ability to even remotely have the one thing the old Fender amps had in spades...reliability :!: :!:

My amp tech has seen a couple and he said he is about ready to just stop working on them altogether. Just too many problems.

Unfortunately I must agree.
Thing is though, I still really like the tone even on the new ones.
I'm ok with PC boards. There are lots of great electronics, most, with fine PC boards.
It's the ancillary parts that causes the problems when you use cheap crap, like poorly made scratchy pots, or plastic jacks that are not even panel mounted.
ARGGH!

Oh, I've done that already.
This amp sounds SO much better with what I put in.
Tung Sol 12ax7's in V1 and V2.
Jan Phillips 5751 in the PI, and a Sovtek LPS 12ax7 for the reverb send.
MUCH better tone. It added a nice smooth clean brightness that was missing, much more harmonic quality, and the reverb is louder and closer spacially to the original signal.
With the OEM 12at7 the reverb on this amp sounds like it's disconnected from the original signal, that's not a problem I heard with the DRRI or the TRRI.

The amp sounds great, but I can't deal with scratchy pots, more so on a new amp.
I don't understand how they can be perfectly clean and smooth one day and the next day scratchy city.
The thing I think it might be is that when I tilt the amp forward to change the bulbs, maybe there is some dust or dirt in there that gets moved into the pots.
And when I tilt the amp forward I make sure not to let the pots rest on anything, so there is not physical contact that might cause this.
I should open it up and take look to see if there is dust or dirt in there, but I shouldn't have to do this.

I think that's very possible...have you tried getting a compressed air cleaner to them? Give them a blast wire that and maybe some contact cleaner/lube?

I would spray some deoxit 5 contact cleaner for the pots, I had some static sound when changing some tubes maybe the v4 the most and the cleaner helped for sure.
