no... not one of those mind altering chemical type, the type that is able to turn your tube amps volume (normal channel) to the point of natural breakup. i have a bdri and i've been on this web site long enough to have read and been part of some very heated discussions. here's the skinny of it i recently changed the tone stack caps in my bdri to .1uf 400v bass cap, .022uf 400 volt middle (both sprague, yes the real sprague orange drop type) and a 250pf silver mica for the treble cap. these things really do the trick. the ones that are original don't do this amp justice. the power tubes are the original gt 6l6r(5881wxt) biased to the factory settings. i know "that's too cold"(b.s.) 430 volts on the plates is still ok. i have 3 sovtek 12ax7wa for pre amp tubes and a jensen p12n speaker. i have recently began to have the opertunity to run this amp at 8 on the normal channel. they are capable of so much more than i or people on this site have gave them credit for. wow! i have owned this amp for 5 years and have never been able to push it like it ought to be pushed until now. my e.c. strat just adds to the fun. even my regular strat sounds awesome played through it. all i'm trying to say in a long winded way is i read a lot of complaints on this site and i now feel that most just aren't pushing their amps like they should. nuff said.

Are you sure you know what idle bias is and its role in a tube audio amp?

Adjusting the bias setting has no effect on the value of the plate voltage available to the power tubes.

Your tone-stack mods seem prudent and I'm glad they've rendered the amp's clean channel more to your liking.

YeAh bro my champ get it all the time. My 5E3 & my drri just when the kids in school and wife at work and then the drri longer when all the above criteria are met and neighbors are at work OR someone's mowing outside. Sometimes I think to myself; wouldn't it be kool to wheel out my 412 cab's down to the bottom of the driveway and really get things cooking. I'm sure it would suck to be tased, it might hurt my amp. Or my guitar.

I love my champ.

hey, arjay, yeh i know about that stuff but i just wanted to see how this bdri of mine would sound with new caps at factory settings. i've went through some tube swaps and biased the amp correctly every time i changed them. just strangely enough this amp (mine in general) sounds good with the old 5881wxt it came standard with. i believe the amp is running a "cold" 13 watts if i calculated that right, and those are 30 watt tubes so yeh, i got some wiggle room, but i don't think i need it. the cap change out did more for that amp than a $200 speaker did(but the jensen p12n didn't hurt). twirlyboggs fortunately i live in a rural area so my neighbors are at a distance from me. i just like amps you have to crank to get their full effect if you know what i mean (i have an ac30 as well so.....).

What was the OEM speaker that the P12N replaced?

Yeah those Eminence OEM's are pretty generic. Kind of like the Oxford's and Utah's that Fender used in the late '60s and '70s. Pry the magnets off the back and use them as Frisbees.

i'm thinking about changing it to a jensen p12q 40 watt to get a little more speaker break up. the p12n holds strong, but it does sound good in this amp. or maybe i should quit while i'm ahead.

You might try a Weber of some persuasion......
