I once had a pro Jr before the threes came out. I liked it a bunch but the thing hummed even at idle. So I sent it back after a few weeks. I have tried the Blues Jr in the Guitar Center store and kinda liked it although it was a bit bright for my taste. The Pro jr did not seem as bright. And with nice hemp cone 10 I bet it would shine. I can buy the Humboldt Hot Rod as well a Blues Jr that comes with the Hempster speaker.

The Blues Jr has a full tone stack, and a master volume control. The Hempster would also mitigate the highs a bit too. The Pro Jr is smaller for a grab and go amp, but very little control over tone and no verb but it is $130 cheaper and I could use the Hemp Cone speaker I have in my SCX2 which is for sale pretty soon.

Actually the cost difference is not that important. It is the utility value of each unit I am interested in.

Incredible though it may seem, millions go to bed each night firmly committed to their belief that TV wrestling is real, Olive Garden serves authentic Italian cuisine, and EL84 tubes produce genuine Fender tube tone.

Well said Arjay. Thanks. I had a Pro Jr, and it was a nice amp except that it hummed too loud at idle. A trip to Guitar Center is in order to see if I can find something under $650 that meets my needs as a small grab and go combo amp 6V6's if possible 15-20 watts 30 lbs or under with reverb if possible.

An older (pre-2005) DRRI should do nicely.

Thanks amigo, all the ones on Craigslist are near a grand so far in the Phoenix area. I don't do biz with e-bay or pay pal so I never look there.

Actually I never liked the Fender "classic" amps sound all that much, too bright. I had several Deluxes in the long past, a black pre CBS, and a silver face. Meh on the tone, too bright, not enough bottom. Most are near a grand. I am more into the tone of a Hot Rod Deluxe clean channel, a little darker than the classic Fenders, but I have one and don't call that one a grab and go amp. I have had in the past; a Pre CBS bassman, Deluxe silver, pre CBS deluxe, silver Pro Reverb, silver Twin Reverb. And a black PTP wired Fender 30 (all tube w channel switching), Now if I could only find an all tube fender 30 for cheap that would be nice. I am looking for something the size of my Super Champ X2 or a Pro Jr, 15-20 watts 1-12 or 1-10 combo 20-25 lbs.

An irreconcilable dichotomy that makes absolutely no sense a-tall.

You'll never get any credible bottom end from those amps -- they all sound tinnier than the "classic" Fender amp sound you purport to bemoan.

:?

I digress amigo. My SCX2 has an excellent bottom end with the hemp cone speaker, as does my Hot Rod Deluxe with C Rex.

Hemp amigo, not only good for other things like rope and smoke, it is awesome in the bottom end.......

I got no use for hemp.

Let the potheads have it all.

Do you get a severe case of the "munchies" after hour upon hour of extended play?

Nah but my music becomes a little more late 1960's after an hour. :D

DBM, here's your amp, you'll learn heaps and love it like no other, fat tone for days, this build runs at about 18-20 Watts, it has a few nice tweaks on a 5E3 and builds into one of the best sounding amps I've heard and with careful building it'll outlive you and me and certainly ANYTHING Fender will sell you for around $600.

Here's my take on it.

Hmmm...You need 30 watts, some real bass thump, and decent grab and go ability? My friend, let me introduce you to the Bantam Bass Amp. Find one, replace the crap Yamaha speaker and baffle, throw in your favorite 15 inch speaker, and wail away. Even though they have a cab the size of a Super Reverb, they are fairly light, certainly enough to make it a grab and go, plus you get that beautiful fullness of a good Bassman derived amp along with the goodness that is a tube rectified Fender amp.
