Hey guys. Im looking at getting a Deville but Im not sure which one would be better for me. I LOVE the clean sounds of Fender amps and This will be my first tube amp. I hear nothing but praise for the hotrod series. typically I play blues, rock, sometimes a little jazz and I think the Deville will be great for that. I do not play metal very often but sometimes I get together with one of my buddies who strictly plays metal. I know the Deville isnt really made for metal but Im planning on running a Wampler Triple Wreck pedal in front of it. My question, Do you think the Deville would be passible for metal with the right pedal in front of it, and if it is, which version would sound better.
also, my friend plays a Line 6 Spider Valve 100 watt head *pukes*. would the deville have enough power to keep up?

The 60-watt DeVille platform will have more than ample output to smoke your buddy's Line 6. The 4x10 configuration will be perceptibly punchier but the 2x12 version will have a more robust bottom end and likely do better with the "metal" genre.

The Deville is loud enough to keep up with anything. It's definitely not a metal amp, but with a decent distortion pedal I'm sure it would do the job. I'm not really an expert on electronics or tube amps, but I've owned both a Hot Rod Deville and a (40 watt) Deluxe and I have thoughts regarding them both positive and negative.

The pros of the Hot Rod Deville:

1) Price. While the new ones sell for somewhere over $900 (which, IMO, is too much to pay for this model), you should (depending upon where you live) be able to find a good used one around the $400 mark or even less.

2) Clean Tone. These amps really do have nice clean tones, among the best (at least in my opinion) you can get in their (used) price range.

3) Volume: As mentioned above, the Deville is loud enough to keep up with anything.

The cons:

1) Volume: amp can be TOO loud to be used practically at home. Once you get the volume above around 2, it can be ear-splitting loud.

2) Weight: my 212 Deville was somewhere around the 60 lb. mark, about 10 more than the weight listed by Fender on the spec sheet. It's loud and heavy!

3) Distortion channel: no one seems to like the overdrive channel on this amp, myself included. I've always used distortion pedals with mine and the channel switching pedal sits in a box somewhere.

4) Reliability issues: these amps do seem to have more than their fair share of reported maintenance issues. Most stemming from the fact that the tube sockets are mounted directly onto the circuit board, which can lead to overheating, broken solder joints etc. In my own experience, the only maintenance issue I had on my Deville was a broken reverb tank, which I had repaired under (a transferred) warranty. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Overall, I think the Hot Rods decent amps for the (used) price and would probably serve your purposes. But while you're shopping try to do a little research and check out some other amps in the price range which you might find you like even better. You'll feel better parting with your money if you feel like you've made a sound, educated purchasing choice.

PS -- I agree the 212 would be better than the 410 for metal.

I have a Hot Rod DLX3 and I play it in it's natural sweet clean tone mode, and I have the Triple Wreck and a Bogner Ecstasy Red pedal for distortion.
With the Red I can get anything from light classic rock crunch and dirtly blues all the way to 80's metal gain and a bit more. With the Triple Wreck it's full on Metal saturated goodness.
I use both pedals for very high gain blues too and the amp handles all of it very nicely.
I would think the Deville would be a screamer with your TW pedal especially with a 2x12.

My HR DLX is 40 watts and it's LOUD with just a 1x12 speaker.
60 watts into 2x12 speakers will be even louder, a noticeable increase in volume over my HR DLX3.

I doubt you'd need more than 60 watts and a 2x12 set up.
Even if your buddy is running a 4x12 cab with his 100 watt head, which is incredibly loud, you guys will be deaf if you cranked both amps. :)

That Line6 spider valve has the Bogner tube amp.
That's actually a pretty sweet sounding amp.
I think you'll be impressed with the sound you'll get running the Triple into the DeVille.

If you need volume along with classic Fender tones and better reliability, consider a used
65 Twin Reverb reissue.
Fantastic amp.
Right now on GC's website there are like 9 used for sale in the $750-$800 range.
GREAT prices for a 65 Twin reissue.
There's even one for $650 listed in as "Excellent".
If it really is in excellent condition that's a smokin deal for a Twin.

Good number of DeVille's too.
2x12's at $450 and 4x10's at $500.

I'd go with the punchier low end of the 2x12.
