I haven't heard one of those hissy pieces of crap that idled as quietly as a REAL '68.

And I've demo'd over a dozen in four different stores -- TR's and DR's.

I know that like me, you've likely played, tested, serviced, and repaired a thousand or more.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone, in all honesty it has really helped!
I think I'm going to go ahead and get my money back on this one, and contemplate what to do next about about getting a good tube amp.

The amp is truly an amazing sounding amp, very rich and warm. The reverb is extremely lush, but not quite as strong/piercing, as the 65, which some may actually think is a good thing... just depends on where you stand with reverb, and how much of it you want. Although distinct hum can be heard when you turn the reverb up... I've never owned a fender, so I'm not sure if that's normal, although I hear its relatively standard.

I think when it comes down to it, the amp is a great sounding, but the design is more than likely rushed. I will have to really mull over if I will go down the same road again with the 68 deluxe.

Again, thanks everyone, your post really did help a lot

Power tubes and a rebias on the cool side made a noticable differerence with mine.
Not sure if it would be quiet enough for your situation, and probably not for recording, but since I rarely play at really low volume its acceptable to me.

How was the reverb, in the '68 CR, that you tried out?

Thanks!

I got my 68 yesterday and finally got to play around today.
Side by side with the 65 in the store the 68's reverb is nice, but not as "lush" as the DRRI.
And it is quieter in comparison.
Still it's a nice reverb. However, compared to my HR DLX3 the CR's reverb seems a bit "distant", kind of like it's separated from the original signal more than on the HR and DRRI.

As for the hiss and noise issue on the OP's 68 mine is fine, no crazy hiss at all and at the same level as my HR. Mine's perfectly fine.
I cranked the volume to 10 and yes there is hiss, which is normal.
Cranked the HR to 10 and it has the same level of hiss.
Plugged in and volume set to around 4 there is nothing regarding hiss.

I also have a TC Electronics Hall of Fame reverb and I've been using that along with the verb in the HR and combined I get great reverbs.
Same goes with the CR. With the HOF I can bring the reverb closer to the original signal.

Over all the verb in the 68 is nice though not as lush and prominent as the DRRI or TRRI.

The one I played at my local GC was really quiet as quiet as the 65 DRRI and 65 Twin I compared it to.
.

Sure of that ? So noisy in a music store .

Give some feedback when receive your amp.

It is often noisy in GC stores. :)
Luckily the day I tried out those 3 amps there was no one else playing, so I got a nice environment to try them out.
Side by side none of the 3 amps has any hiss problems.

As I posted above I got my 68 and played around with it today comparing it to my
HR DLX3. No crazy hiss out of either amp, both are pretty quiet in that regard.
With a distortion pedal plugged in or course the input signal is hotter and there is a bit more hiss with the guitar turned up but not playing.
Still, the hiss level is very normal.

Compared to my Egnater Vengeance the Ven is a very quiet amp.
It's very impressively quiet on the clean channel and amazingly quiet on the high gain channel even when the gain is cranked to 10.
The loudest "noise" with that amp is the built in fan.
In a quiet room and at very low volume levels I can hear the fan spinning more than any hiss.

After playing and comparing my HR and 68 CR I'm not positive which one I'll keep.
Both amps have their version of great Fender tones. The HR is brighter, the CR is smoother and has great tight low end.
The HR's reverb is nicer if I had to pick which one has better reverb.
Sensitivity and response is better on the CR though the HR doesn't lack either.

I'm now considering getting a 65 TRRI or a Custom Vibrolux. I didn't know about the Vibrolux until doing some searching yesterday.
It's a 40 watt using 6L6 power tubes, and 2x10 speakers.
I'm wondering if the Custom Vibrolux is tonally more like a half power TRRI?
Seems I prefer the tones from 6L6 tubes over EL's or 6V6's.

The other option is a SuperSonic 22.
I played one a few months ago and really like it.
The high gain channel has some cool tones for built in distortion, much better than the
HR DLX3.
Plus the SS has an effects loop and that's a positive for me.

I bought a 68 CDR display model at GC in Atlanta, and got 10% off because it has a very slight rub mark on one of the corners. I tried it out for about 30 mins on a slow day and it seemed really quiet, which I confirmed at home. I didn't even know about the hiss until reading about it later on forums. The whole process was ironic, because I usually buy online (no sales tax and free shipping), but the deal was too good to pass up and I knew that this one was a winner.

I _really_ like the Celestion through the Vintage channel (especially when at volume 5+) since it seems to give some depth to the standard Fender tone, and love the reverb since I dabble in surf. I have a couple of tweed amps, so not sure how much that I will play the Custom side, but we are just getting to know each other. I'm wondering if the hiss is a run of bad tubes, since most of the noise problems that I've experienced have been tube or building wiring issues. Still, a $1000 amp should have reliable tubes (notice that I didn't say NOS or boutique).

I'm really digging mine, and it slots in perfectly with the tweeds and Orange amps that I already own. YMMV.

I went through 4 68 Deluxe Reverbs in a row... each one had a different problem. One hissed... one had a loud tick in the vibrato... one had a screeching reverb... one just flat-out sounded bad. I finally gave up and got a 65 DDRI off the floor. Not because it was the amp I wanted.. but because it was the only one that seemed to work...lol
But yesterday they had a 68 Custom Vibrolux on the floor that sounded great.... so I quickly decided to bring back the 65 DDRI. The sales guy said he'd get one still in a box from the back. Haha... no way! I'll never buy another amp that I don't play and test thouroughly.

I hate to gank this thread, but I'm having almost identical issues on a '68 Custom TRRI that I just got delivered on Tuesday. The amp has a real nasty hiss under most conditions. The volume, treble, and reverb all seem to exacerbate the issue the more you turn them up. I ordered the amp through Sweetwater, so whatever the issue, I'm covered under a 2 year warranty through them. Some things I have already tried:

1.) Removing all Power and Pre-amp tubes and reinserting them. This did not alleviate the problem. Removing select pre-amp tubes removed the hiss, but also cut the sound from the speaker. Re-inserting the tube brought back both sound and hiss.

2.) Removed the cables from the reverb tank, I didnt have an deox spray or whatever it is to try to clean the connections, but simply removing the cables did not alleviate the problem.

3.) I probably should have listed this first, but trying different rooms/outlets. Using a proper grounded outlet makes it somewhat better, but not much, and if I'm using a non-grounded outlet I better not try and crank the reverb above 2 or its a thunderstorm in my amp. A weird side note, my buddy has a '65 TRRI(pretty much the reason I decided to get the '68), I took the amp over to his house to make comparisons, and for some reason my amp seemed less noisy/hissy/hummy over there. In comparison though my buddys '65 is silent under all conditions, while mine still produced an audible hum.

And that's about all the troubleshooting I'm comfortable doing with this amp. I've read that the problem may lie in the capacitors, and that type of replacement is way outta my league. Obviously the amp need some kind of work, and as I said earlier, Sweetwater covers the amp for two years. My dilemma now, after reading a some of your posts, is that I am not willing to ship 4 amps back and forth from Indiana to make sure I get the one that sounds right, granted I live in Ohio and its only about a days shipping. I am damn sure the Twin Reverb is the amp I want to use(call it my dream amp), but would it behoove me to skip Sweetwater's warranty, and take it directly to a local tech? And by local tech I mean the SamAsh about a half hour from my house that is certified to work on Fender equipment. I'd rather have the amp fixed and sounding right, than risk having them ship me 3 more brand new ones, each with there individual issue(and again, that would be unlucky, but I am notoriously unlucky with online retail), and I gotta be honest, after watching some of those youtube videos, I don't trust FedEx.
