Hey everyone, I just wanted to get some feed back on the Custom 68' Deluxe Reverb and personal opinions.

Here recently I bought a Custom 68' Deluxe Reverb. The amp itself sounds beautiful, it is extremely rich, warm, and responsive. I love the tonal qualities of this amp, and personally prefer it to the 65' deluxe reverb.

But!!! there is one problem. I am currently on my second 68' deluxe in the past month. The first one I had shipped to me at the beginning of July. Immediately after plugging up the amp I noticed a very distinct and loud hiss. With no instruments plugged in front and the volume set at 1, the hiss was very noticeably present, and continued to worsen as you turned up the volume. The hiss does not go away when a guitar is plugged in, making its presence highly distracting. I returned the amp and got my money back. A week ago I bought the amp again and had it shipped to my house, hoping for something different... but sadly this amp had a distinct hiss as well, and even more sad, this one was louder.

The hiss can best be described as a constant white noise. It sounds like someone is frying bacon on a high heat, or like someone saying "shhhhhh." It's been suggested that it may be a problem with the pre-amp tubes.

I did go to a local guitar center and test out their floor model, and although it is sometimes hard to hear, between music playing and people obnoxiously playing loud on other amps, it sounded like their amp didn't have a hiss at all, or at least was very minimal. Their amp produced a small amount of hiss when the volume was at 10 (which is normal from my understanding) and this amp's hiss at 10 was still quieter than mine around 2-4 (volume)

I probably will return this amp or exchange it, but, I still would like to keep this amp, it sounds great, I just want to get a model that doesn't have a hiss, or fix it.

What are your experiences with this or opinions?

Thanks everyone!

Here is a video, with an amp that has a hiss that is relatively similar to mine... just to give everyone a basis to go off of... btw mine is not triggered by the volume, as mine is always present at can be at times louder than this amp, mine also will occasionally pop and crackle... but only sometimes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UajzjKYz4eA

I'm sorry for you , second amp ......

Did you try this amp on other home , house ? In case of electrical problem in your home .

Did you try it with no cell phone , PC , halogen lamp , neon lamp in the room ?

If it is not a bad Fender desing , it may be a bad tube(s) .Do you have some 12XX7 at home ?
Or some "dirty " tubes contacts . A good contact cleaner may help .

If you don not want or can not ty those fix , try some esy test ;
1- Remove the first tube V1 , power on the amp ; hiss or not ?
2- If some hiss remove V2
V1 is the first tube at right when you look from the back of your amp

Good luck

The symptoms kinda sound like input or gain stage issues. The higher the gain and poorer the wiring dressing and layout --- the more background white noise hiss. You may need to go to a low-noise 12AX7 type tube. Like the Sovtek 12AX7LPS or a RCA 7025. Or maybe, a lower gain 5751.

Try cleaning the sockets and pins with contact cleaner, to insure the best contact. And check the layout of wires going from the circuit board to the sockets. Keep them as far as possible from each other. Try crossing wires at 90-degree angles to minimize interactions.

Good luck! Keep us posted.

It is a PCB. But, usually wiring goes from the board to the sockets, in these amps. The sockets being attached to the chassis. I haven't seen the Custom '68 DR layout, but most RI Fender amps follow this type of layout.

BTW... check the wiring from the input jack to the board. If the jack is soldered directly to the board, it may need to be re-soldered. Due to poor solder and soldering.

Indeed it is.

And every one of these piss-poor amps that ultimately gets returned to the store because their owners don't feel like jumping through hoops just to get it to play like it's supposed to represents one more nail in FMIC's coffin.

Sorry to her for your trouble ..
Why would you try to fix the problem yourself, you paid for the new working product and they gave you a lemon (another one).

Go to the shop and ask your money back.

I was thinking of buying the same amp, but after so many reports of failure .... naah, no way.

I'll stick to Leo's original stuff

This sucks to hear/read that.
I just ordered a new 68 CDR today.

The one I played at my local GC was really quiet as quiet as the 65 DRRI and 65 Twin I compared it to.
My HR DLX3 is also very quiet.
Man I hope I get a good one. But if not I'll having GC send replacements until I find a good one. That amp is too sweet to give up on it, for me at least.
Plus, I got it at a 25% off the regular $1K selling price. :)
Not gonna let that deal go easily.

Thanks!

Trying new tubes ( if you had some at home ) and contact cleaner if it work , is faster and cheaper than returning the amp and hope the next one will be alright.

"Hope" is seldom part of a successful business model.

*Somebody* at corporate better get their chit together, and quickly. This product line thus far is bombing worse than Michael Moore giving a commencement address to cadets at West Point.
