Hi!

I'm a Marshall guy basically but I tried a Fender 57 Champ the other day and was BLOWN AWAY! Check out the link below.

Since I'm totally new to Fender amps I'd like to hear which amps you guys consider the best for a dirty vintage blues tone?

Cheers!

Johan, welcome to the Forum! :D

Maybe try an original tweed 5F1 Champ? Or a blackface era Princeton Reverb? Both have that 6V6GT creamy OD. With a tad more headroom than an EL84 driven amp.

Thanks :-)

How do you think the Blackface Princeton compare to the Tweed Princeton?

And how do you think the Brackface 65 Reissue compares to the orginals?

Cheers!
Johan

Johan,

The BF Princeton Reverb sound quite a bit different than any tweed era Princeton. The 1950's tweed Princeton amps sound more like a Champ. One 6V6GT, single-ended, Class "A" tone. Browner, earlier OD. More compressed tone than the later two 6V6GT, push-pull, Class AB1 BF PR's.

I have not played on a '65 reissued PR. The '65 reissued Deluxe Reverb sounds pretty good. Close to the original BF DR, IMHO. The DR sounds much bigger, louder, less compressed than the PR.

Hey Marshall man I did the same thing ur doin and I ended up with a 5E3 and couldn't be happier. I have my champ for when family is at home. I have my 5e3 when I goto small gigs and I would like to get the step up in wattage of tweed next.

If you need some more decibels, you might want to listen to a 59 Bassman. They have been the go-to gigging amp for a bazillion blues-rock guitarists for decades. A nice gritty sound when pushed and they take pedals very well.

1+ On the Bassman. Everyone should try a Bassman and a Super Reverb they a great amps!
they are still being made for a reason. Jim Marshall liked Leo Fender's design so much he emulated his early Marshall's after the Bassman. Is the Bassman perfect "No" but it is a tone machine. I have had a Bassman for 10 years and it has been great.I had a Super Reverb for 6 years before I sold it and it was a great amp as well.I foolishly traded the Super. Both are loud amps those 4x10's can move some air.
