What the heck I'll throw this out there

I have an older Date code EE DRRI the one with the fake ground switch on the back.
It needed the pots cleaned so I pulled the board they are connected to, the original C-10 ceramic "bright cap" was still there also.

I de soldered the cap cleaned up the pots and now I feel like I miss the cap a little bit.
Just wondering if anyone here has tried different cap values or styles with an improvement over the stock cap ?
I found one person online who says they used a mica cap of the same value and it had less edge to it so...........
Just wondering

here is what I ordered

5 Piece Lot, 27 pf 500 volt 5% stacked film silver mica capacitor S730A

I may order the same in 47pf too , but I want to try a smaller value first to tame the highs a little

OK new Silver mica 27pf bright cap installed
the tiny ceramic is gone !
total time including rechecking the bias (bumped her up just a bit) one Hour !

The sound is much improved over both the original ceramic and no cap at all !

Chris,

Glad the 5751 work out. Which brand was it?

The Tungsram ECC83 is a very nice tube, for sure.

:D

Hey Steve
I started with the ge 5751 and now I'm trying a ???? shoot gonna have to look
OK its a red labeled Raytheon
The one I want to try is my coveted RCA 5751, it tests off the charts and is in my little VHT head right now.

The Tele came alive with the new cap, I'm serious ! not sure if dropping the value by 20 pf or just using the silver mica did it, however Thats the Tele sound in my head !!! I Like IT !!!!

Thanks Mojett ! I got the board a little warm on that top connection, but she is good !
I learned nearly all of this from the guys here by the way ! Even the grumpy ones :D
I went from very basic knowledge to being able to diagnose and repair and thats cool !!!
And yes I safely discharged the caps with the tool I built from the guys info here too.

Chris, IME silver mica caps really open up the upper midrange-to-high transition. This is where most Telecasters shine. Prolly, the natural resonance of the wood used and the bridge pup. You should also hear a clearer nasal tone in the bridge 'bucker of the Les Paul.

I just restrung the Strat this morning, some strings were going dead, G was real bad and the fresh set on nickle wounds made her SING !!!
Now I have the Deluxe Reverb sound I absolutely Love !!!

I do believe I'll sub in some other higher quality parts as we go, in a year or two i should have the ultimate DRRI !

I'm shocked at the lack of information online about the Kendrick Brownframe speakers, well after today there will be at least one tone hound's ear witness to it in a drri.

The specs would seem to make it a perfect match, given the somewhat high cost of said speaker i kinda understand why there is so little info, i got mine used on reverb.com for a third of the original price including shipping.

So what I have now is the original Emi that was installed at the factory in May 1994, I've been able with tubes and as you know a cap change make it very livable, I'm hoping the upgraded speaker will make it stellar !!!

If the change is indeed stellar I'll start a new thread 8)

Chris,

I know a lot of folks that have 12-inch Blackframes and love them. I know of no one with Brownframe speaker. You looking for more of a "British tone?" Be interesting to read your opinion of the Kendrick versus, say, a Celestion V30.

British isn't exactly what I'm looking for, i have a fresh Tonker in a box in my workshop.
I understand the Brownframe has a british flavor, Just hoping for a touch more smoothness to the top end.

Its great now, I know that generally speaking the emi and the wanna be jensens they put in the drri amps are easily upgraded to put it nicely, and so I'm throwing a dart at the wall to see if It opens up any new tone options.

Trying the Kendrick is a matter of chance in that I found it cheap on Reverb.com and though why not ?
