I have a DRRI and a Blues Jr. The DDRI reverb is "boomy"... great for general use... but to me doesn't really have that classic reverb tank sound of the 50's surf music. The reverb on the blues jr. actually comes closer.... but still not quite there. I've tried various reverb settings in my Line6 HD500. They are different.. but still not quite right. Then a friend suggested a dedicated spring reverb pedal. $200 for a reverb pedal when both amps have reverb and my HD500 already has a half dozen reverb choices? What a waste, I thought. Then I heard it... the sound I've been searching for for years! Absolutely amazing. (his pedal was a Topanga.. but I'm sure there are others) Went right over to Guitar Center and ordered one!

Maybe a Fender 6G15 Reverb Unit? You need a good tremolo/vibrato circuit, too. May I suggest a brownface era amp, with the three 12AX7 driven vibrato section?

:D

I have this reverb pedal, made by Strymon and it is pretty amazing. Check out the videos on the link I posted.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Incredibly, I find this hard to fathom.

The reverb-equipped Fender combo has been a staple of the surf-band scene since 1963, when the Vibroverb was first released. And the blackface re-issue models are pretty close to the original specs as designed by Leo.

Frankly, I'd start looking for an issue with your amp's reverb circuit.

If you mean Dick Dale type surf tones and you can't collect a 100 watt showman, a Fender stand alone reverb unit, & 4-6 15" cabs loaded with JBL's, the RI twin reverb with the 15" speaker does a great job of nailing that classic Dick Dale tone. Otherwise Beach Boy's or Safaris sound can be achieved with just about any Fender amp with reverb & vibrato. The Deluxe Reverb won't do at higher volumes though. For me it is a Twin Reverb for the classic surf sound.
