Guys, sorry if I missed this, I haven't been around for a long time.....

Anyway, I just picked up a used DRRI in mint condition that has a couple of things I haven't noticed on ones I've seen before....the on/off switch and the standby switch are covered in rubber and there is a "cage" around the power tubes.

When did Fender make these changes?

Thanks.

Maybe around 2011 or 2012. I had a 2010 DRRI that didn't have the rubber covered switches or cage.

Wait until you open the chassis up and see what's been done to the tremolo circuit.

If you like the way the amp sounds don't worry about what's inside, just play the thing and enjoy!!

Glad I never plan on opening the amp up, I'd sure hate to find those bad things in there....

And Nik, thanks, I do like the way it sounds and I'm sure not going to worry about what's inside, I've never opened an amp in my life and I sure ain't gonna start now.

I don't think any changes will make the tremolo better or worse in the DRRI's. It's the wrong type of tremolo/vibrato circuit no matter what, but that's just my opinion.

Pray-tell, what would be the "right" type of tremolo/vibrato circuit?

Arjay, recently I've been paying more attention to that very thing and to me a real bias vary sounds better, but that's just personal preference.

The bias-wiggle trem circuit is significantly different from the opto-isolator type -- both in the perception of how it sounds and the basic theory of operation. Personally, I prefer it too but the traditional blackface tremolo (with the exceptions of the Princeton, Vibrochamp, and derivatives of same) all employ the trem roach so that's what we're stuck with for better or worse.

Hey Nikola! I just checked FB "tremolovibrato" --- it got 50K likes. Let's see... #tremolovibrato...

Actually, dialing in a tad to vibrato gives a bit of 3D depth to a dead room. Really. :D

When you play in a cover band a good trem is mandatory for many of the popular songs from the '60s (Creedence, Shadows Of Knight, The Turtles, Beau Brummels, etc). And even some contemporary tunes feature the effect -- Tito And Tarantula's "After Dark" comes to mind.
