The only Solid State Amp I ever had that sounded great for guitar was a '60's SuperSound Baldwin. It was bright blue and black and full of germanium transistors. It had a thick warm sound and could be overdriven beautifully. They show up on eBay from time to time. BTW, what city do you live in and why is it bad for tube amps?

Hey guys, thanks a lot.

I do not have much knowledge about the SS.

And this thread is helping me a lot.

are there any others amps SS? regardless of brand and model.

These are too new to determine how good they are, but the concept looks promising.

Gus, your situation is coming into focus. Can I ask you how much power you need to play? I'm thinkin' that a bullet-proof cathode biased power tube amp would serve you for many years. Is humidity a concern? If so, you can get an amp built on rails, as opposed to circuit boards. Then you only have to replace a few tubes(or 1 tube), depending on how hard the amp is used. Good tubes in good amps, can last many years!!! Art

I would like a amplifier SS between 50 and 80 watts.

Gus, can't help but consider tube amps(my bad) ! Those Roland amps seem really cool. It would just be about the build quality and if they deliver the tone, you're after. I would contact the company for some more info. As far as Quilter Amps goes...... I was unaware of them. They maybe a very solid amp. I noticed that Keb Mo used them on his "Bluesamericana" Album. Good Luck on your search!!! Art

A Mustang IV would be the better choice than the III, imho. V is just too big, as you need a cab to go with it. But an additional speaker in IV compared to III makes a huge difference, sound wise. I played both the IV, which I owned, and III, which 2 of my friends own(ed). The difference with the same settings and same guitars and everything was huge. You also get a 4 button footswitch with the IV, whereas you only get a 2 button one with the III, and you really need the 4 button one for mustangs. You could buy it separately, but my recommendation is to go with the IV. You'll wind up spending approximately the same amount of money, if you buy the 4 button FSW along with the III, but the IV sounds better.
It's true the IV is 150W, however, you can easily use it on low volume (it's got a master volume button), and the sound won't change. Granted, every amp will sound better when the speaker is loud enough so that it can "breathe", but the difference between IV and III in that regard is minimal (despite the IV being 50W more). But in case you ever need an additional 50W - there it is with the IV.
I also owned the Frontman 212R, 100W SS combo and I sold it and bought the Mustang IV - and I was very satisfied when I did.

If you do happen to go the tube way, you obviously should look for amps with lower power. Around 20W should be plenty. I'd suggest a Deluxe Reverb or a SuperSonic 22. Great sounding amps and they're probably louder than you'll need them (if you open them all the way up, of course) :) I don't know if you could buy an amp online from somewhere else without it costing a ton of money, but especially the Deluxe Reverbs are very reliable amps and you won't be disappointed with the sound (same goes for SuperSonic 22, except that, from what I've read, they've been less reliable..although Fender have supposedly fixed all the issues). The only "problem" you could have with them is the volume, but you could buy an attenuator in that case and lower the volume while maintaining the sound (kinda like a master button).

I wish they had demo'd the reverb. I'd like to see if it can get lush and surfy. The only thing this amp lacks from my perspective is an external speaker jack. Not hard to tap off the internal speaker cables though I guess.

I understand the solid state desire. I have a nice tube amp, but there are some gigs where I would prefer a good solid state amp--lighter weight, no warm up time, decent tone at lower volumes, and no worries about tubes acting up in the middle of a show.

I played the latest incarnation of the Roland Cube 80 (modeling amp with digital effects) in a full band situation a couple of times last spring. The JC Clean tones were amazing, even better than the previous generation of Cubes, and better than the cleans on my Mustang III (which I am going to sell soon). If this Blues Cube Artist does that kind of clean, and if the reverb can do surf, I would definitely consider it, even at the $900 price tag.

I'd be interested in checking out the new Blues Cube, too. Sounds promising, at least from the description and the video.

Hughes & Kettner and Laney make some nice SS amps. They uses discrete FETs and sound pretty good. Other than that, upgrade the Op amps in any SS amp for improved tone. If it has 4558 or TL072 chips, upgrade to a TLE2072CP. They're about $3 each and make a noticeable improvement.
