Hello,
I have got a new Princeton 68 for a few months and I'm completely happy with it. Simple and work great at low volume, whatever the guitar you plug in. Nice. And very quite. :D

Nevertheless, I wanted to push it a bit. I plugged a guitar and turned the guitar volume to 0.
Then pushed the amp volume.

After 4/5 a hum started, becoming very noisy after that. At 8 to 10 it's like you're listening to the sea... Adding treble adds lots of noise  but even with treble at 0 the noise is still there.

I really wanted to know if it is just normal or if there may be some trouble with it...

Indeed I have an "emulation" amp that is quite at every volume but it is not the same technology at all.

Thanks for the feedback.

Check your guitar first.
Amp ; try to turn volume at hight with no guitar.
You should see if it is the guitar or the amp make the hum .
Wich guitar do you use ?

It's a Les Paul. But it's exactly the same noise with no guitar plugged in.

Amp must be on warranty , can you return it at the store you bought ?

Issue might be a tube . Are they all seat well in their socket ?

Is you home have good electrical ground ?

Cell phone , PC , hallogen lamp may do some hum in the amp . Shut all these thing a check hum

Definitely a problem. Check the items mentioned above and if no relief is forthcoming, take the amp to an authorized tech. You should be able to dime it and hear nothing beyond a slight hiss.

Thanks, i'll make these checks.

I live in a French village and had to buy it from a website which will make it not so easy with the warranty. Bad news.

RaphRaph, welcome to the Forum!

One thing you may want to try (and it won't void your warranty), is to spray a little contact cleaner on each tube's pins and the sockets. Work the tubes in-&-out of the sockets a few times. I like Caig Deoxit GN-5.

Good luck!

I'll do the contact thing.

I tried again today and almost change my mind  it's difficult to say if it is normal or not without comparing with another one.
Ok there is a hiss that is very strong at 10 with treble at max, but who play at more than 6 ? And I tried the Vox vt20 everything at max and the hum exist even if lower in fact. I was worrying too much.

As long as I cannot compare I will keep it as is. I need to try it with the band to see if it is annoying when playing loud in a real situation, not when standing just in front of it and listening to the noise.

Thanks for your advices (and welcome in France Startele52; in Paris do not miss Montmartre and La Place du Tertre in the evening to be a real tourist.)

Hiss or Hum... my english vocabulary is too poor... I would say "hiss".
In fact it does "chhhhhhh" to be read in French :)

The "place du Tertre" is just beside Montmartre, go there to eat an evening.

Hiss is more of a tube related issue. Usually white or brown (random Brownian motion) noise.

Hum = more of a power supply, ground loop issue. 60Hz (mains or heater line) or 120Hz (rectified hum) sine wave noise.
