Don't really know why, but today I ordered a Gretsch G52222 5 watt class A tube amp which is the same as a Fender Champion600. Uses a single 6V6 power tube. I plan on replacing the speaker with a Jensen and want to change the tubes to US nos tubes. Any suggestions as to what 6V6 tubes. All the different suffixes are greek to me :?

I am not alone in liking the tung sol 6v6's. It is a great sounding tube with overdrive being more creamy than crunchy. If one likes a bit more compression and rock crunch, JJ's would be the tube. JJ's are a bit louder too. The tube store has reviews on many 6v6 tubes and is very helpful without being able to hear them.

Minesotastrat look for NOS tubes. Will you hear it in a low end amp ?

I had a g5222, actually regret selling it but in my experience the best mod you can do is switching out the 6 inch speaker for a 8 inch. You'd need to build another baffle and have to be careful because that places it pretty close to the tubes but that 6 inch just always sounded boxy unless I was in a closet sized room. If you're going to change the speaker anyways, might be worth looking in to! I changed the grill cloth on mine because it didn't seem to breathe very much and sounded more open after.

I don't know, I haven't changed them yet. I do know that My Blues junior is not a high end amp and when I changed the stock tubes for nos GE tubes it was like night and day difference in sound. :)

This is my plan, thank you for the link. Don't forget the Bjr is 3 times the price and 3 times the power so dollar per watt is about the same.

Minnisota...try one of these. They brought my '64 Princeton to life! I love em.

Or one of these...have one of these in my '68 Champ...and might I suggest a Kendrick blackframe 8 for it as well. Great Combo, my Champ sure digs em!

Food for thought, thanks T2. I have a sleeve of Phillips Jan 12ax7's to go with that 6V6GT.

This do not work like that .

Building a amp , any power, cost a minimum price . It is more expensive to build a small amp because you can't sell it the right price. You must cut more on the quality on low end amp.

You have a Blues Junior which is a very good "low " power amp . Why did you buy this Gretsch ?

If you need a bedroom power amp , is better to put your money on amp attenuator and use you Blues Junior .

I can understand is fun to have many amps ( I have 11 ) and put some mods on . We learn .

Enjoy your mods
