I picked up a Pro Jr a few months ago and haven't had much time to work with it. So today I was playing my '95 MIM Strat through it and noticed I couldn't get a clean tone for some ambient stuff I was working on. I kept eliminating pedals until I was plugged straight into the amp and discovered that is the problem.

The volume was set to 5 and tone set to 6. I know that more volume and a harder will push the amp to break up but if I turn down the amp much more I don't have any volume!

Tube issue or...?
Thanks

The Pro Jr isn't really made for clean at volume, so that sounds normal to me.

Really? Would a Blues Jr give me clean and the ability to push it to break up?

The BJr is more versatile, with a Volume and a Master Volume, allowing louder clean, or lower volume breakup, depending on the settings of these two knobs. For loud and clean, put the master to max and bring up the volume to the desired level. For breakup at lower volume, put the Volume to max and bring up the Master to the desired level. With the master at max, the BJr will start to get breakup somewhere over 4 on the Volume knob. Add reverb and the fat switch and you have even more versatility over the PJr.

You could get a little more clean from the PJr with lower gain preamp tubes, and/or a higher rated set of output tubes, and maybe even a bias adjustment. But this will still be at the cost of some volume loss.

+1

And also on the BJr you can at least pull the Mids down somewhat on the stock amp and all the way down on a Billm modded version, this scoops it like a Blackface amp and cleans it up even more, a fair amount of dirt lives in those mids. Can't do that on the PJr.
