After much consideration I finally swapped my DRRI for a '68 Custom. This amp is everything that I wished the DRRI was and seems to suit my playing a lot better. However, I'm noticing that the reverb is extremely weak compared to my DRRI. Cranked to 10, it's about as powerful as 4 on the DRRI and I can get a short trail but no wet surfy sounds at all. At 3, the reverb is basically off. It almost sounds like it's working but is just way too quiet in the mix. I don't expect the reverbs to sound exactly the same but this can't be normal. I changed around v3 with the same tube type with no difference. I also took out the reverb tank and took it apart and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong inside and the foam pads have been removed. I don't wanna just return it because they're hard to come by in my area but I'm also not very technically inclined. Any suggestions please??

If you have a spare hi-fi interconnect cables with male RCA-ends --- try replacing these in your Custom Deluxe. Rule-out issues with the stock cables.

Good luck!

Good point, I'll try that right now. I should also add though that I just noticed when I unplug or plug in a guitar cable with the reverb on, the splash is deafening like it was with my DRRI if that makes any difference.

Oh no! I switched RCA cables and the reverb remained the same. I then plugged the original cables back in and now there isn't any reverb at all :(.

That amp was obviously 'born under a bad sign'......

"And if it wasn't for bad luck, it wouldn't have no luck at all."

:(

Take it back for an exchange or a refund.

I'm an idiot and somehow at some point really didn't plug the reverb back in properly so it does still work but is too weak like before. I'm probably just gonna have to take it back, I just wish I could diagnose the issue myself because Id want another one and there definitely aren't any others around here. Is there anything else I could try before biting the bullet?

You have any photos of the tank's inner workings? In any event, even if the tank has a defect, you need to return the whole amp.

You said that you can get that loud "reverb crashing" noise? One last try... clean the control pots with good contact-potentiometer cleaner.

Not sure how helpful these are.

If I hear the crash still then everything should be good up to the potentiometers right? I've never done anything like that before but will try it. Maybe the pot is actually defective?

Your amp came with a five-year manufacturer's warranty. I strongly suggest that you use it.

You're right, I'm just going to take it in tonight and let them sort out if they want to try repairing it or more likely order another one to replace it. I could probably find a tutorial to take a look at the reverb control pot because I'll bet that helpful suggestion up there ^ was right but realistically I don't know what I'm doing. At least I finally found the amp I want. Just need a working one!

My reverb on my 68 twin is pretty strong, would try another one

That's what I figured! 10 on any blackface or silverface reverb amp should be total overkill, not just barely there.

I've been watching the 68 Custom series with interest. In an online video I saw comparing the two Deluxe Reverbs the 68 Custom did not sound wet or surfy at all whereas the DRRI sounded great. Some of the online reviews I have read mentioned that the reverb is not as strong in the 68 Custom.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zUYUVJr9fBg

Starting at 4:38 is a comparison of both amps with reverb at 4 and then at 10. The difference is considerable.

I am holding out for the 68 Custom Vibrolux Reverb, but I won't buy it if the reverb is that weak. I would be very interested in hearing what you think of your replacement amp.

That OEM tank maybe an issue with the Custom Deluxe Reverb. For my '63 RI Reverb Unit, I went to a US made Accutronics tank to get good depth tone. I have not dealt with new amps using these off-shore tanks.

That's what I thought when I saw the springs in that tank, and the plastic shrouded transducers. Maybe a better tank would be the cure.
