Went to GC today and got a chance to play a 68 Custom DLXR, 65 DRRI, 65 TRRI.
Of the 3 I didn't think the 68 DLXR would be an amp I would prefer.
I was wrong!

Fender's description of what the 68 sounds and plays/feels like is spot on.
The increased touch sensitivity is awesome and was immediately noticeable.
I love the feel of this amp.
Comparing it to the DRRI it has that same "spanky" bite. Overall the tone on the 68 is perhaps a bit "darker" but still has plenty of brightness and chime.

Pinch harmonics come through easier and louder than with both the DRRI and TRRI.
The TRRI is the Fender clean tone champ as most of you know.
The 68 DLXR and the DRRI are quite similar, but I like that the 68 has reverb on both channels. And the bassman circuit on the 68 is fantastic with a deeper tone.

I have a Bogner Ecstasy Red pedal that I used with all 3 amps, and the 68 sounded and felt amazing with the pedal at any gain setting.
I got a chance to crank the volume to 6-7 and the power tube break up was fanfreakintastic! Too bad I don't have many opportunities to be able to crank it properly at home.
Unfortunately, the only 68 they had didn't have a working reverb, but I'm sure it's as great sounding as it is on any Fender.

I was really surprised at how the volume controls on the 3 amps is so different.
Even though the TRRI is 85 watts compared to 22 watts of the other two, the TRRI's volume control was easier to dial in a quiet volume. The 68 and DRRI's volume controls are as overly sensitive as my HR DLX3.
Fender needs to come up with a better volume control for the lower wattage amps to give a better taper.

So now it looks like my decision is between the HR DLX3 or the 68 custom DLXR.
I like the look of the black face amps more, but I'm not making my decision based on the cosmetics.
I think I'll get a 68 DLXR and then I'll get to play it at home next to my HR DLX3, and then return the one I don't keep.

You shouldn't return a perfectly fine working amp......c'mon, keep both! I would. 8)

+1

Then he can photoshop a picture of him playing both amps along side Jimi at Woodstock and dazzle us all with his image-manipulation skills.

 OH, that's clever!
Well...not really.
And I don't do that kind of thing, as my vanity is not as large as others on this forum.
For example, certain posters who post on a thread just to be a jackAss. :)

And my image manipulation skills are pretty good.
I work with Adobe's software on a regular basis.

My reverb spring popped during shipping i guess so the store put a better one in for me and it sounds stellar clean. I had a blues deluxe with a speaker change the 68 is alot better and closer sounding to the vintage amps

You really should relax a little, and take that in the light-hearted manner it was intended. It seems clear to me that Retroverbial was referring to the thread in which his amp collection picture was questioned by you, due to the cut-out of Eric Clapton ("The Player") in the picture, as being an altered image. You remember that thread?

Who's the JA now?

+1,...meaning I agree with Shimmilou,Rverb,...you need to relax a bit. I'm not going to get in on the name calling, but friend,...you need to,...again,...cool down a bit as it was meant to be a light hearted comment concerning the photos of Arjay's amps that are being referred to. I take it that you must be new to the forums here as I didn't recognize the username. Don't take these guys too seriously when you see them call someone "cupcake" or some other similar name. You won't win many friends here by fussing back and forth like that! Now that we have that out of the way,...let me comment on the amp that this thread is about. I have not tried one of these out yet,...but I just might(Yeah,...just what I need,...another amp since I already have a '59 Bassman LTD Vintage Reissue that I bought just last month,...along with a little Fender Champion 20 practice amp,and my Hot Rod Deluxe III along with my MIM Standard Strat I bought last year. What I need is another Strat or two to keep up with the amp collection     ). I hear that these '68 Custom amps sound pretty good and they may be well worth a look. I may try the '68 Custom Princeton reverb,...maybe!

Yes, I know what thread he was referring to.
And I commented in that thread.
There is/was no need to bring it up in another thread, as that just tends to keep things going, when they shouldn't be.

I am relaxed as that is my nature. :)
Others may be helped your advice as well.
As for the "JA" comment, that's why it has a smiley face.

:)

Your comments are kindly accepted.
Yes, I am new to this forum, but not to forums in general.
I still think the comments in that thread should remain there, and any lingering feelings or thoughts should have remained there.

Now, back to the topic at hand.
I too would like to try out the Princeton but can't find one around here.
Luckily I got to try the 68 reverb along with the DRRI and TRRI at the same time.
I LOVE the feel and tones from the 68 in comparison.

Most if not all current Fender amps tend to have a similar family tone, except for the Machete. Yet the different models offer their own take on the Fender family tone.
The 68 CR was a surprise for me mostly because of it's "feel".
I love that in an amp. Seems the 68 CR doesn't get talked about as much as the DRRI and TRRI and I wonder why that is?
Being not as popular as the other models it's been tough finding a 68 CR in the used market. I have no problem going with new, but I don't think I need the HR DLX3
if I were to get the 68 CR.
I've got a great high gain Egnater Vengeance and an old Tube Works 1x12 combo.
If I get the 68 CR I think the HR DLX3 will go back. :)
