I just got a 65 twin reverb amp and I am hearing a rumbling/rattling, almost like an unintentional distortion, when I hit low strings. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Thanks.

Something loose in the cabinet or vibrating in the room? Prolly should rule out these types of low frequency vibrations, before looking into the amp's circuitry.

+1

Might be a speaker's voice coil unraveling as well......

Did you sort out the problem?

If not, try replacing the pre tubes one at a time with a good pre tube and see if that fixes the problem. You can also swap around the pre's you have to see/hear if there is a difference.

One of my new HR DLX3's developed the same problem after a few hours of playing.
It was fine at first then one of them started producing a bad distorted tone right at the attacked on a chord or single notes on the low strings.
It was one of the pre tubes, it had gone bad.
I took all the pre's out and put in different pre's that I had on hand, same 12ax7's as that's what the HR DLX uses. Problem solved. I found the bad tube and tossed it.
