I recently purchased a used Excelsior Pro from GC. Though I like the sound, I am always experimenting. So tonight I purchased two new 12AX7's (GT's) and installed them. The two tubes I removed had no "names" stamped on them, though on one tube I can make out an "AT7" which I assume is a 12AT7. The amp was PLENTY loud prior to the switch, and the trem worked just fine. Now, I can turn the volume up to 3/4 and still play in my room, and the trem doesn't work. As long as the 12AT7 is in V2 (I swapped it back), everything seems to work. I also tried two ECC83's with the same results. FWIW, when I turn the amp on with the 12AT7 in V2, the tube glows, but if a 12AX7 is in V2, there is no glow. I was about to open it up, but before I do, I wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue?

If I understand , you amp can only playing at low volume since you do some test with news tubes .
Same with "old" tubes ?

Yes you may need to open your amp If you have some electronic skill , if not ...I don't know what you can do !!!

Um...I am no amp expert, but a 12AX7 and a 12AT7 while they may look alike are two different tubes. My guess is that amp requires a 12AT7 in V2, check the tube chart on the inside it should tell you what is required.

Also it could be the tubes you got while new are faulty as well. Just because a tube is new doesn't mean it is a good working one.

Lastly if you are not an amp tech, do NOT open up your amp and start poking around, you will like end up dead. There are LETHAL voltages inside a tube amp.

The amp calls for 12AX7 tubes specifically, in the description, specs, and owners manual. :?

Thanks everyone for your replies. Turns out it had a loose terminal in the V2 tube socket. The old tube pins were bent in such a way to allow contact. I tightened all the terminals and all is well!
