Well I did some more trouble shooting..

1. Took the amp to the back back of the house and locked it in a bathroom and played it loud for about an hour with just a cable and strat... All of the rumors are true Twins don't break up much at 10... That should have loosened the speakers up a bit and I found out what needed tightened down in the house in case of an earthquake..

2. Swapped all of the preamp tubes out with known good tubes.

3. Tightened up all of the screws I could get to without dismantling the amp. The four top screws on the speakers were a little loose, the rest seemed snug enough.

4. Hooked it it to the ext. cab and I could notice the noise faintly in the cab, so it still makes the noise even with an ext. cab. The speaker in the cab is not as efficient as the stock ones in the Twin, so the noise is less pronounced.

5. Hooked my Egnater Tweaker head up to the Twins stock speakers while mounted in the Twin and no noise..

6. I snugged up the reverb tank's rca jack, it was a little loose.

7. Did the tap test on all of the tubes and just pops, no hells bell ringing.

After all of that it still makes the noise I have in the clip but it is a little fainter. Also if I knocked on the front baffle in different places while powered up. It makes a slight ringing noise when I hit it close to the top middle. Makes the same type of ringing noise if I tap in the same place on the control panel, around the middle area..

Any ideas oh mighty amp gurus? Did I get a dud? At gig level it would probably be ok and not noticable, but miked up and recording it at lower levels like around 4, it would show up in the track..

Maybe my Deluxe Reverb has just gotten me spoiled in the headphones...

Here is something I have not tried yet...

Found this at mylespaul.com

Appears to be coming from the vibration of the thin metal ring like clamps around the big tubes. Guess one vibrates just enough on certain notes.

That would make sense the power tubes are close to the right center of the amp, and that is where it will make a noise when I thump the baffle in that spot...

It could be that the drip-edge molding around the baffle board is not as firmly affixed as it should be and is vibrating audibly.

I have been thinking that as well...

Try putting a thumb or finger on the molding at various locations as you play the amp and see if the noise decreases or disappears altogether as the note or chord decays.

I found the problem POWER tubes..

All four of them rattle like a baby rattle...

I pulled two out of my Blues Deville and I had a couple of spares and bam, it sounds like a brand new amp, which it is btw...

I am gonna see if the place I bought it will give me some new ones until I can get some good ones ordered up..

I believe the tubes in a new Fender amp are warrantied for ninety days.

Be sure to check the bias if you replace them and adjust if necessary.

Still working on getting some new power tubes, but I have been putting the amp through the ropes anyway. I am liking what I am hearing, now that I am pretty sure that the issue is bad tubes instead of bad amp, I do feel better in not having to start shipping that beast back to the point of origin.

I have been throwing all of my regular pedals at it, Hardwire CM2, Rat, Boss MT2, EH Soul Preacher and the Zoom G5 for the mods and delays and such... Very low hiss on all settings up to about 7, which is pretty loud. It does have a volume drop when I used a EH Small Clone in the chain, but that is the pedal and not the amp.

Both channels of the amp are really different in the eq, the Vintage is really close to the way my DRRI behaves, kindy chimey, midrangy.. The Custom channel is a lot beefier, more clarity in the bottom end and midrange. The Boss MT2 really likes that side, sustain for hours and when I cut the univibe or rotary on it is like standing in front of a beach with heavy surf coming in.

I have two strats that I have wired up with Dimarzio's and those pickups are really working that amp well. I have Diamrzio Area 58, 67 and 61 with a rosewood neck in one and two Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2 and a Dimarzio X2N with a maple neck in another one..

I have some tracks I want this amp in but I am going to wait until I get some decent power tubes stuck in it...

Any recommendations on good tubes for this model, I am thinking some sort of matched NOS Winged 6L6GC for the power tubes and good clean preamp tubes. My music style tends to be more towards flowing finger picked rhythms with chorus and delay and the leads are more towards a mix of SRV, ZZ and Gilmour..

Winged C's would be an excellent alternative for the output stage.

Well I decided to take the amp to a Fender Service Center here in Missoula,MT..

I am gonna let them take a look see for me before I spend a lot of money on tubes, just to make sure...

The tubes I am looking at are around 200.00-300.00 and I would really like to know for sure that amp ain't got no issues other than what I am thinking it is...

If its a tube issue just have them replace them for new ones and concentrate on the preamp tubes.

Ask them to also optimize the idle-bias setting for optimum tone and tube longevity.

Well I finally got the amp from the shop yesterday. No more overtones. They replaced the quad power tubes and stuck a new 12at7 preamp tube in it...

Now it seems to be a little hissier than it was before the service, but it does have a lot better tone and power.. It has a hiss with the volume all they way down and nothing plugged in... Sorta white noise, the hiss does not really get louder as the volume is turned up, until it is around 7 and higher..

The bias voltage was set to 48, per manual, said the tech.. Around 24ma per tube...
