Hello I have a Fender Pro Jr tube amp and was getting a ringing noise from it and was told that I probably needed new tubes. Put the new tubes in but the ringing continued. I took it in to my local guitar shop and they tried another set of new tubes but the ringing was still there. They told me it was probably the pots and that I would have to send it in for repair.
Does this sound right? I can make the tubes ring by turning the amp on and tapping the tubes with my finger nail or just playing through it.

Thanks

Neil

Typically, a ringing noise is a microphonic tube, and it is possible that even new tubes could be microphonic. I doubt very seriously that it is a pot problem. I would suspect a plate resistor(s), or a poor solder joint(s), for starters, or maybe a cap in the signal path.

I would take it directly to a repair shop yourself, and not use the guitar shop as a middle man, especially since they know nothing about amp repair. Your just asking for problems dealing with extra people.

Do you have a warranty? The warranty on new Fender amps is five years.

Does it ring at all volume levels even played quietly?

Ringing tone is usually a tube that's gone "microphonic", which many tubes can be.
But most won't ring unless it's being played really loudly.

Did you do the tube swap to new tubes?
If not, then you should ask for the old tubes just so you know that they were actually changed.

A really bad tube will even ring if you tap the amp on top of the cab.
If the ringing gets louder when you do that, then suspect the pre tubes.

As others have said, if you still have warranty and it's not the tubes, then have a real amp tech take a look

The amp has 4 tubes it's the 2 smaller ones that ring.

Thanks all, it's the 2 smaller tubes that ring. usually have the volume set at 3 to 4 and tone at zero as I play through a Line 6 peddle. I bought a new amp but would like to get this one fixed and keep if I go out to play because it's light and easy to cart around.

With the amp on, just gently tap each preamp tube with the erased end of a pencil. If the ringing gets worse, you have your suspect.
