Spotted these made by a builder close to me, looks like a high quality product and the design is something new to me and quite interesting, I wonder how they would sound with the ported sides and closed back?

That does look interesting. I like the side porting idea, and guess that they would sound very nice, with a wide sound dispersion.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.

Lets see, your close anyway, if you need an amp to try with a new cab could be an excuse, errr i mean reason to build one and we'd get to find out how it sounded!

Win win for everyone i think.

There might possibly be some measure of cancellation of certain mid frequencies. Possibly somewhere in the 1 kHz to 4 kHz range ... but then of course that may sound good. It's hard to say without having a better look at the guts and nothing is as good as trying them.

Speaking from a purely hi-fi standpoint we all (should) know the primary purpose of the enclosure is to prevent air rushing back and forth between the front and rear of the cone as the cone makes its excursions. An open backed cab presents air with a fairly long travel path from front to back as well as two corners to go around making frequency cancellation at least somewhat less likely due to dissipation. Ported enclosures and in particular front ported enclosures almost always have some type of tube or other means of lengthening and controlling the air pathway between the front and back of the cone. There are exceptions to that of course. I have seen enclosures which were front ported and had no discernible control measure in place beyond some partial partitions created by the internal structure and they seemed to sound OK. The idea behind the path lengthening scheme in ported cabs is to try to eliminate out of phase pressure waves which are by nature self cancelling. The original example of this method is the curvy megaphone you see on many older speaker designs and still today in many tweeter designs. We call them horns.

I think it would be interesting to try one. Maybe a little modification of exactly which frequencies get slightly cancelled might be just what the doctor ordered.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
