So, I'm checking out my '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb and for V2 and V4 I find a couple ECC83-S tubes instead of the 12AX7's I was expecting. I replaced them with a couple of '60's vintage Lowery 12AX7's and ch. 2 sounds much better - are ECC83-S and 12AX7's interchangeable or what? What's the difference (if any)...?

ECC83 is the European designation for a 12AX7. The "S" suffix indicates something special about the tube, the meaning of which varies depending on brand and age.

Here's what Eurotubes has to say about their ECC83S......

ECC83S ( 12AX7 )
Description: High quality low noise replacement for any 12AX7 type tube. All our preamp tubes are stringently tested for noise and microphonics using our Amplitrex tester driving an external amp, so there is no extra charge for low noise and microphonics like other tube vendors charge, we simply toss tubes that do not pass the tests.

A couple of these JJ's were in the '66 Vibrolux Reverb Amp that I just finished restoring (V1 and V4 sockets). They sounded pretty good so I felt no need to replace them.

I believe the "S" suffix = Slovakian made.

Well, all JJ tubes are Slovakian made, that's where the JJ factory is located. Slovakia or the Slovak Republic, formerly Czechoslovakia. The "S" suffix on GT tubes however, does indicate JJ made, or made in Slovakia (maybe this is what you were thinking). Typically, the S suffix on a tube indicates something special about the tube as compared to the same tube without the "S" made by the same company. In the case of JJ, they have both the "standard" ECC83, and the ECC83S.
