Hello everybody, I'm new to the forum and wanted to come ask a question about an amp.

I'm in the market for a 100 watt amp and have always loved the Fender sound. I was all ready to get one of the new Super Sonic 100 amp heads when lo and behold, they discontinue it! Uh oh! I see them on ebay used but now I'm suspicious.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this amp or had any Fenderesque alternatives in the 100 watt range. I love big cleans like the Super Sonic promised but I also want nice driven tones. Also, the Fender reverb is a must! Thanks for your help and it's great to be here.

The SS 100 Twin is still available and has everything the SS100 Head has plus two speakers. Enough poop to blow the doors off of a National Guard Armory! If you use pedals, the '65 Twin RI is superb and at 85 watts is so close in power to the SS100 as to be undetectable between the two, and has the classic Fender Reverb! As does the SS 100 Twin. And if you're not a tube snob, the Mustang III, IV OR V may just fit your requirements. Then there's the SS 60 combo or head, depending on your speaker preferences, that you may find kicks booty! Your Fender options/combinations are almost endless. Since the almighty $ is always a consideration, I've included the Mustang amps for your consideration. I have 2 MIII's, a M1, a Twin Reverb RI, a DRRI, and a Pignose!!! Decisions, decisions!!!

I find fewer and fewer venues where a club owner has any appreciation for bands dragging in 100-watt combos or stacks. Most players eventually realize this and buy something more sensible. And a quick check of the C/L ads in Anywhere, USA will confirm this -- people can't give those mega-watt behemoths away fast enough, usually at a huge financial loss.

thank you for your suggestions. I'm afraid I must have tubes, if for no other reason that I like the smell. I'll look at the SS 60, but it doesn't have the other cool features of the 100, and is lacking those most important 40 more watts of big bottom tube roundness.

Other than more power what features are available on the ss 100 that are missing on the ss 60?

From what I understand, only the SS100 has the mid notch feature, which seems really cool. Why would they not have that on all of them? It also has the auto bias thing, which seems like something to break, but still cool. There is the speaker damping feature as well. In all, just a lot more stuff (including watts) for not a lot more money.

The SS60 is fantastic though. And unless you're playing stadiums, 60W should be plenty. You can also use it as a head and connect it to a cab, should you choose so.
I have the SS60 and it sounds awesome, plenty of power in it. Perhaps even too much.

Try it out, it is loud enough to make you deaf and it will sound awesome while doing it :P
