Good Day all,
is there a mod out there to "quiet" my 25r? i have a Rajin Cajun in there and it sounds great however it's VERY loud....and I suck. Is there a mod out there that I can install some sort of Power Level dial? I like the sound/tone and price (paid for) but I can't really use it without headphones.

Any suggestions??

Thanks

You have four volume controls at your disposal: one clean volume, one drive volume, one master volume, and the guitar volume (or two). Learn how to use them.

Perhaps you should've bought a 15R......

I used to own a 25R with a Ragin Cajun speaker. Owned it for several years before selling it a few months ago so I know what I am talking about. The clean channel is just that - clean regardless of the volume. Turn it down and it will sound the same as turned up, just quieter. You want a dirty sound? Turn the drive/gain control up and master down. You get preamp overdrive (which pretty much sucks in this amp) at lower levels. Use your guitar volume control to adjust the overall volume. Lesson over. You're welcome.

I think he's just saying that the amp is just too loud for his situation even at the lowest setting. There's no need to be rude.

To answer your question, if you've got the volume on 1 or less and it's still too loud, then you really might want to consider another amp. You could put a power attenuator between the amp and speaker, but I've never heard of anyone doing that with this type of amp. Plus, that will cost more than the amp is worth. Maybe just trading down to a smaller amp is what you should do.

I have no experience with the 25R, but I owned a 212R. It had a touchy volume control. I had the best results with the amp volume set at 4 and then I would control the volume with the guitar controls. Not great, but it worked for a couple years.

Thanks, I was asking about a power attenuator mod. I have a VOX and Bugera, both with a power attenuator and I love the flexibility of them. I was just curious if anyone had heard of this for the 25r.

Never heard of anyone investing the money on a power attenuator on this type of amp. That said, I guess it can be done. People usually use attenuators to drive a tube power amp into pleasing overdrive. Solid state power amps don't overdrive in the same pleasing manner so the use of an attenuator would kind of be strange with this amp.

Sorry, I guess I should have berated him for his ignorance. Then maybe, with any luck, people might think that I, too, "have been building and repairing amps since he was popping his zits at a Pearl Jam concert." I can only dream.

I have a Champion 110 with a Lil Buddy in it. Predecessor to the Frontman 25r.

The normal channel volume pot starts at a moderate volume even on zero. I assume this is the problem you are dealing with? You could try to spray some DeOxIt in there and fix the pot, but I never did. Or replace the pot if you're really hardcore.

An easy workaround is to use the volume knob on your guitar and roll it back a bit. Another method is to use an overdrive pedal on relatively clean settings to smooth some of the spikeyness in the signal and reduce the output a bit. You can do a similar thing with many clean boost or multieffects pedals. Just use the pedal's level knob as an additional volume knob.

Pretty much my favorite clean sound is strat --> pigtronix fat drive --> Carbon Copy Delay --> Champion 110

It almost sounds like the volume and/or gain pots are linear and not audio taper. I don't have the schematic of either the 25R or 110. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks!

Looks like the volume control is a "B-taper" pot = linear. Unfortunately, also looks like it is a snap-in style pot. Maybe interesting to try a logarithmic or audio pot. Other amps with linear volume pots benefit, in the range of control, using audio pots of same value.

solid-state pot sub-types:

• A - Audio or Log taper
• B - Linear taper
• C - Reverse Log taper
• G - Graphic taper
