I'm embarking on a new musical project and will soon need to get a new amp.

For my last band, I used a Fender Hot Rod DeVille (which I have since sold). I liked the tone, but I'd like to see what is out there before simply replacing it with a new one.

What I'm looking for is a tube amp with nice clean tones that works well with pedals (which I usually use for my distortion). It needs to be loud enough to not be completely drowned out by my bandmate's Twin Reverb. And I'd like to reasonably expect to get one used for around $600 or less.

We will be playing a lot of basic garage rock stuff a la the Ramones or the Stooges (but, as I said, I would still like to be able to produce nice clean tones). And I'll be playing a Tele.

It'll ultimately come down to what sounds best to me, of course, but I thought I would solicit some suggestions before embarking on my "listening tour." Thanks!

Better to ask to you bandmate to play less louder play more music, less dbs.

All bands play too loud anyway

Why does it have to be a tube amp?

While I won't say a drri would out gun a Twin, I do know that mine with a Wizard speaker is rocking loud, and even with decent headroom.
It would keep up to relatively loud stage with anything.....and impress.

Thanks for the suggestions, all!

It definitely doesn't have to be AS loud than the Twin (my bandmate is a pretty reasonable guy, and I don't expect him cranking it up to 10), but I do want to get a decent amount of volume out of it before it starts breaking up. So no Blues Jrs., for example! The DRRI is a great amp -- and probably would be loud enough -- but it's a little more than I'd be comfortable paying for at this point, even used. Just the same, I'll be sure to give one a test drive while I'm shopping...

A Super Sonic 60 or Twin will suit you well.

If i were lookin for a more powerful amp of say 60 watts on the cheap, I almost pulled the trigger on a pignose g60vr that I saw on ebay last week for $299 plus shipping.
Have one already and its great.

I know it comes across as trolling but I'm honestly confused why a good quality solid state amp should be ruled out.

And I wasn't addressing you anyway.

That's a fair question which I will answer. The tube amps, when overdriven, can provide a warm, full-sounding distortion that simply can't be replicated on a solid-state amp. I've learned, from first hand experience, that the overdriven tone on a tube amp is simply better (to my ears). Otherwise, not much difference (though I'll grant you that solid states are generally lighter and less-expensive, and obviously don't require periodic tube replacement).

I've been playing for 35+ years and my poor ears have never been able to hear a significant difference. And as an amateur I have a hard time justifying the extra expense.

Quite often folks seem to be set on a tube amp without even considering that a quality SS amp might meet their needs while saving them a lot of money. So I always ask and there is never any intention to start a debate. I don't hear with your ears and you need to get what's best for you.

Cheers,

Why don't you keep it in the family and get something like a Fender Super Reverb? Unless the other guy is cranking the Twin up to 8-11 the Super should be able to hang while offering a complimentary, but slightly different tone.

Also, I agree with you on the tube business. If you have decided that's what sounds good to you, you won't be happy with some digital madness or solid-state trash. It's cheaper in the long run to go ahead and buy the amp you want now, rather than settle for something you'll want to upgrade in a year or too. You'll have a better amp right now but most importantly, you'll be happy.
