I would like to suggest the Genelex Gold Lion series of tubes. From everything I've read about them, they are a total gyp as they are rebranded something-or-other tubes by New Sensor and cost twice the price of other tubes of the exact same make, but they have gold pins and they have golden lions printed on them and you will know that you are playing the caviar of tubes. There is a lot to be said for that. Imagine launching into a solo knowing that your tubes were made by some Chinese wage-slave with no hope of salvation on this earth. Imagine how bad that solo will be. Now, imagine that you are launching into a solo knowing that your tubes were made by a Russian wage slave but have golden lions and golden pins on them. The confidence inspired by this knowledge will make your solo burn into the minds of your listeners. Shell out the cash for the Gold Lions or you'll regret it.

I've pretty much made my tube selection. JJs it is, and I'll pick one of the retube kits from Eurotubes. The price is fair, and JJs seem to get good reviews. Eurotubes seems to be a good little company, and I think I will give them a call prior to ordering.

Thanks for the advice.

I've never dealt with Eurotubes so I'm not sure, but I think they are just a shill for JJ tubes. Not that there is anything wrong with the tubes, I've used JJs before and been happy, but if you call the Eurotubes guy and ask him his advice on tubes, he'll say "JJs". I think its the only brand they sell.

I'd also like to throw in my observation that while scouring the 'net for tube info, there is a lot of:

Dude A: "I used to use XX tubes, but every other one went bad within 3 months, so I switched to YY and never looked back blah blah blah blah...."

Dude B: "I tried YY tubes in 6 different amps and they all sounded terrible, so I switched to XX tubes and now my life is perfect blah blah blah...."

Dude C: "I tried XX tubes and they blew up instantly, so I tried YY tubes and now I'm a quadriplegic blah blah blah...."

Dude D: "I use a solid state modeling amp...."

Dudes A, B, C: "OMG TUBES ARE THE REAL THING BLAH BLAH BLAH TUBES TUBES GET SOME TUBES TONE TONE TONE TOOOOOOOOOAN!!!"

Yes, Eurotubes sells only JJs. No, they are not a shill for JJ. I have been buying all of my new tubes from them for several years. They test everything they sell and they warranty everything they sell. They have excellent customer service, fast shipping and good prices. If you have never dealt with a company before, I suggest you do a little research before you bad mouth them. Unless you enjoy looking ignorant, of course.

Good stuff of ads. :D

GL B759/ECC83 is a good tubes. But not all of their line is worth the extra $$$. The GL 6922 are so-so, compared to the EH 6922. And gold pins have nothing to do with the quality of the guts or overall tone. If the gold pins made a big difference, why are there no output tubes (6V6GT, EL34, or 6L6GC, etc) with gold pins?

No, they are not. In fact, the Genalex gold pin 12AX7 are Russian made in the Reflector factory, and are a long Plate and not the same as any other of the Reflector made tubes, while the standard Genalex 12AX7 are made in China and are a short Plate. There are people who don't know squat about tubes that like to parrot the "rebraned" nonsense without even looking at the tubes. Many times you have to look closely to see the differences in tubes, and sometimes it is even necessary to use a magnifier for a good close look. BTW, New Sensor is the distributor for many brands of tubes (most all are Reflector made, EH, Tung Sol, Sovtek, Svetlana, Mullard, etc), and New Sensor does not label/relabel tubes, nor do they make tubes.

People may not realize that the gold pin tubes are not just regular tubes that have their pins dipped in gold, but the gold pin tubes are something special, whether they are specially selected, or something different in the design compared to other similar tubes, so the gold pins are to denote special tubes. So to label gold pins as some kind of snake oil just shows ignorance of tubes.

Gold pin JJs ECC83S tubes are of a different design from their standard ECC83S. Don't know about their 12AT7 or 5751. I do know the gold pin JJs sound different and better in my Wrecking Ball than the standard tubes.

Gold pins may denote selected quality stock with Euro or Russian made tubes. But, not all tubes. Hell, the Chinese gold plate everything. Some of the their gold pin tubes are not so good. And their gold plated, ceramic socket are downright bad.

The plating does not enhance the tone of the tube or the length of life. For instance the steel pin (non-plated) Tesla E83CC is as good as their gold plated stock. For this tube, the primo variety is the E83CC with the factory "32" stamp (Roznov Vrchlabi factory).

shill [shil] .
noun
1.a person who poses as a customer in order to decoy others into participating, as at a gambling house, auction, confidence game, etc.
2.a person who publicizes or praises something or someone for reasons of self-interest, personal profit, or friendship or loyalty.

If all they sell is JJ tubes, and their website is full of tube info biased towards how JJ tubes are the best, how are they not a shill for JJ tubes? I've never dealt with them because after reading their site, I found them to be a shill for JJ tubes. Granted, they may be completely correct in their bias, but they are a shill nonetheless. I'm glad that you've had good experiences with them, but I'm not sure how it makes me ignorant that I don't deal with a company that only promotes one brand of tube, come hell or high water.

I've got an Arizona beach house that you'll just love.

So, you are not knowledgeable about tubes and you have a house on one of the many fine lakes in Arizona? OK.... :?

So do you refuse to buy from a Chevrolet dealer because they don't sell Fords? Taco Bell doesn't sell Big Macs? Can't buy Sunoco Super Premium at the local Shell station? So any business that caters to a particular product is a shill? That is the most idiotic statement I have heard in a long time. Idiotic and ignorant of common business practices.
