Hello Everybody,

I love my Egnator Renegade heads and how they allow anyone with a multimeter to check and set the amp's BIAS. Not all amps have the special insert your probe here port, so my question for today is:

How do you BIAS? Do you use a multimeter with tube socket attachments(probes) or do you use a special machine such as the BIAS King Pro? Why do you prefer one over the other?

Looking forward to your input. I am in the market for some BIAS tools and am not sure which way to go.

Peace out.

if you are talking about biasing the renegade, you don't need anything other than a multimeter I believe. you attach the probes into the test points, and adjust the bias with a screwdriver. I believe the amp has el34 and 6l6 tubes, so you will have 2 separate settings.

check the manual for more info.

I must not have made my question clear as there have been 31 views and one answer that missed the question. Let me try again.

When if you BIAS your own amps do you prefer to use a special tool like one of these; http://www.amplifiedparts.com/products/S-TBIASMETER or http://www.amplifiedparts.com/products/S-TBKINGPRO

or do you prefer the Multimeter attachment like this:

Why?

http://www.eurotubes.com has videos on how to bias your amp and they also sell bias probes. see the following:

I own one and bias my tube amps with them. Works great!

I have a Weber Bias-Rite that I like because it has Voltage and milliamps at the flick of a switch. Easy to use but I would feel comfortable using a multimeter and a jack to plug into also.

I use the Alessandro do it yourself bias and matching meter.
It comes with two bias sockets, and the meter box has two needle type meters for each tube, works great.

Anyone ever tried any of the 'active' bias solutions out there? Not to be confused with standard auto bias systems. This circuitry monitors various tube parameters, mainly cathode voltage, and continuously makes the needed adjustments...at least theoretically.

Supposedly this compensates for aging tubes, changed tubes, temperature changes, whatever. Obviously it corrupts a pure tube circuit with a lot of solid state but it's not in the signal chain so it shouldn't affect the tone in any obvious way. Besides, if you're playing through pedals you don't exactly have a pure tube signal chain anyway.

It's an interesting concept and would be very useful, especially for the non-tech, if it works as advertised.

Cheers,
