New guy here...just started on guitar seriously, I have some skills but would not call myself a player. I have played bass and banjo for years. I was gifted a hot rod deluxe iii by my family so trading is not an option, but mods are not a problem as that is my nature any how.
I need to reduce volume output, that thing is seriously loud, and most of my "playing" will be at home so a lower volume benefits everyone. I have read on the forum that a less efficient speaker would help so that is in the plan, also a 6v6 tube swap was mentioned. My music interest lean toward blues an jazz so I like the clean channel for the jazz thing but the overdrive channel is pretty harsh.
Any advise from those more experienced on brands and characteristics would a big help
Thanks
Tom

Two helpful and inexpensive suggestions:
1) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Volume ... 2ec81dffcc
The volume on a HRDlx is extremely sensitive and hard to control. This device 'in-the-loop' makes turning down easier. (It's NOT an attenuator per se)
2) http://www.thetubestore.com/Resources/G ... ain-Factor A lower gain pre-amp tube to tame the harshness of the 'drive' channel of a HRDlx. My preference in other amps is either 5751 or 12AT7.

Thanks for the input, sounds like that could do the trick. I am used to a 500watt swr bass amp, who knew a 40 watt guitar could be so loud lol
Thanks
Tom

The only thing work well is an attenuator .
Less efficient speaker or lower gain 12XX7 or similar is lost of money .

I use the Weber Mass 50 and it is not because I can't mod a amp !

aweber.powweb.com/weber/mass.htm

The attenuator keep the amp tone a low volume , other device , not .

If you've got enough floor space you could build yourself an isolation box

THE iso cab is pretty cool, I think I'll take a run at building one of those just for the heck of it. I found a bunch of slick builds on the net. When I first read isolation box if I had the floor space I was thinkin' 6x6 sound proof room. LOL sometimes it hurts being this stupid
Thanks man...slick idea

Put a GT12AT7 select in the first pre-amp slot today, I can tell a difference, not a bunch but some, volume and tone. My Les Paul likes it, my music man Darklord don't care, you can't make that guitar sound bad! I don't think the groove tube was the best choice but it was all I could get my hands on locally. I'm going to order a couple of better tubes maybe, a 5751 and maybe a better 12AT7, I'm thinkin' I should go ahead and get a pair of jj6V6's while I'm at it. Eurotube has some pretty nice pkgs. I may just get the Blues no. 2 pkg, sounds pretty nice for $70.00. It has 2 JJ6V6's an ECC83S in V1, a ECC832 in v2 and a balanced ECC83S for the phase inverter. It drops it to around 30 watts and lets it break-up a little sooner and will smooth out the sharpness. We'll see. The quest for tone never ends!!!
Later.......Tom

Groove tubes are very good tube. Sure 12AT7 give less overdrive to the amp

I didn't mean to say it was bad quality wise, I should have said I would have rather had a 5751. The reason I say that is not because I know anything about tubes, it is because a lot of what I've read that seemed to be the preferred one. The blues package I referred to uses a ECC83S in the V1 slot, which again doesn't tell me anything except it is different number than the other 2. Anyway, we'll see how it plays out.
Thanks for the reply, it's good to here from other people about this stuff, everything is a bit of education for me.

ECC83 = 12AX7, and the S suffix has a different meaning now than when the original Tesla ECC83Ss were made (JJ absolutely not Tesla), but indicates at least something special about this tube to set it apart from a typical ECC83. IMO, any 12AT7 is not the best choice for V1, but a 12AT7 is perfect for V3, the phase inverter (PI). My preferred lineup is V1-5751, V2-12AX7, V3-12AT7.

BTW, be sure to set the bias when changing output tubes, especially critical if you switch to 6V6.

+1000 No bias adjustment = 6V6's will blow

Can you have enough grid negative voltage from the amp to a proper bias ?

Yeah, I read setting the bias was critical. Settings For 6V6's in a 6L6 amp are? AS I mentioned in earlier in a post this is all new to me, but I'm learning, thanks in a large portion to the feed back I'm getting here. There is a audio guy in town who is also a service center for many amp companies so I will certainly let him handle that task. It seems this is all pretty subjective, like most things related to music, beauty is in the ear of the beholder.
I guess the logical thing to do would do would be play amps 'till I found one that fits my needs. I've always been one to try to make something out of something else, like my first performance car. all my friends had Mustangs and Camaros, I had a '63 nova wagon with a built 350. I guess that's some kind of personality flaw :) Anyway, this hot rod won't make it to the street, but it's fun buildin' it.

Hey shimmilou
What would the difference be between a ECC83S And a balanced ECC83S?

Is not critical but 6V6 need a new bias , if not = 6V6 blow .
