Hey i'm wondering what kind of ''upgrade'' i can get out of replacing some tubes in my Super-Sonic. I've had it for the past 2 weeks and (so far) i love it. I've had other tube amps before and sweared by JJ's... but this guy is a new beast. I love the bassman setting but find the vibrolux (like many) thin... is there any way to change that with tubes? Basically i'd like to know about any interesting mods or replacements i could add to really make this thing shine!
Any one installed a fan in yet? (it's a tad toasty)
thanks.

Welcome to the Forum.

No matter what tube amp I get I always replace the 12AX7 in V-1 for a 5751.
The 5751 known as the "Blues Tube" knocks the edge off of the distortion and gives a nice creamy blues flavor to the amp.

So i can just pop in a 5751 without tube matching or anything like that?

Yes. The 5751, 12AT7, 12AY7, 12AU7, etc. are all the same tube, but each gives you a different amount of maximum distortion.

+1 on dropping a 5751 for V1. However, V2 is the one used exclusivelly for the clean channel. I had great success with a tung sol 12AX7 reissue in V2. It added a bit more fat to the Vibrolux and more balance & clarity to the bassman. These tung sol tubes are rated "high gain" - simply means more output than the average 12AX7 - and it works perfectly in V2.

I also dropped another 5751 in V3, the one used for the Burn channel. I wanted to tame the gain a little bit and a JAN Phillis 5751 did a perfect job for that in V3.

You will find that JJ's sound good in "darker" amps such as the Hot Rod series, but they are too bright in my opinion for the super-sonic, or classic blackface reissue.

For power tubes, I was looking for something that would make the super-sonic "less mesa booggie and more Fender", and after extensive research, I went with the TAD 6L6WGC-STR (short bottle, like the classic General Electric - one of the holy grail 6L6 tubes). These brought the classic Fender vintage clean to edge-of-break-up tone I was looking from the super-sonic. However, if high distortion /metal is what you are looking for, there may be a better option.

Good luck

Since it's the pre-amp tube...I assume on biasing. Is it a smoother sound completely, or just when you set it on overdrive? Is it a commonly found tube (First time I've heard of it, but then I'm not expert). And it's only for V-1, and leave the others with 12AX7's?

The Tung-Sol reissues completely changed the character of the burn channel in my Super Sonic. Way less gain.

I currently have a Champion 600 and have an EH 12AX7 in the preamp. And was wondering if a 5751 will somewhat tame my amp? Any recommendations? Thanks.

Is there a way through tube replacement to fix the noisy effects loop in the SS? No matter what runs through the loop there is always a lot of noise added - is this the tube that the loop uses or something wrong with the wiring?

You've got me really interested but I need you to explain to me, can I just swap the valves or do I need to alter anything else in the porcess..

swiller - if the only valve that you swap are the little pre-amp tubes (i.e. not the two large 6L6GC tubes ones that appear when you look at the back of the amp), you don't need to do anything, just plug them in while your amp is shut off (power & standby): remove the aluminum tube casing and the old tube, and while being very carefull, align the 9 pins of the new one into the tube socket. It is a bit tricky to fit the 9 pins into the 9 holes of the tuibe socket, but once you do this, put the aluminum tube casing back, turn it up and play ! I Hope you'll enjoy a difference too if you decide to change your pre-amp tubes.
