Well the second Super Sonic turned out to be bad as well from zzounds. Reverb tank is dead, and this amp is noisier with volume turned to 0 than my old 70s Peavey amp that has bad pots with an unshielded neck pickup on a strat plugged in. Just nasty. Sending it back.

So I'm looking for just a pure clean amplifier now. Are the DRRI any good, quality wise? I don't want an amp I buy new/used and have to send it to a tech as soon as I get it just for it to be usable.

You might want to search the forum on the newer DRRI. You might have better results finding a much older used one. :?:

The balance at Fender must have been upset when they did such a great job with the HRDlx III. (maybe took some of the DRRI mojo) :o

I thought the HRD had problems too, mostly because of the way they soldered the input jack on?

The HRds, all versions, as well as many other amps, use a type of jack that is mounted to the circuit board. This type of jack can develop problem with the solder joints cracking, or the jack threads stripping under the stress from the plug into the jack, if the jack is subject to excess force, or the jacks can last a lifetime under normal use. The HRDlx is no more prone to jack or joint failures than any other amp that uses a similar jack. Obviously the more traditional types of jacks that are isolated from the circuit board are typically better in many ways. The HRds being so prolific, you will likely hear more about them, both good and bad, than practically any other amp ever made. After some 14 years of trouble-free jacks in my HRDlx I, I changed my input jacks to the traditional Switchcraft type.

The most common problem with some HRds was the heat generated in the +/- 16 volt power supply, which could cause cracked solder joints and/or broken traces in that area, largely due to thin circuit boards, and these problems were exacerbated by the use of RoHS solder after around 2005. This problem has been addressed in the version III with the use of thicker circuit boards, and so far has proven to make this circuit more reliable.

Evidence of the problems with the newer DRRI, and other newer Fender amps, can be found on the pages of this forum using the search function. The DRRI suffered largely from trem and reverb noise and function problems. The "balance" that I referred to, seems to be a shift in problems from the newer HRDlx to the newer DRRI.

DRRI is the way to go. Best sounding amp for the money. I have had zero problems with mine.

I have owned both the DRRI combo and the head-only version.

I quite liked the combo, but made the mistake of plugging it into a Weber California Ceramic 15 -- after that, I didn't like the sound as much with the stock 12" speaker. Eventually I sold the combo to the son of a friend who needed a good amp. Soon after, the head was issued and I bought one and set it on the Weber 15.

It was exactly what I wanted: a sweet top end, round bottom and present mid, and relatively light weight. It's the amp I've been looking for for many years.

I've owned a SFDR and played a number if DRRIs. They're a great sounding amplifier.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Another shout out for the drri.
I have the special edition wine red, which I inserted a wizard speaker. Hate to say it.....but this amp sounds good AND has been totally reliable and quiet.
Given my junk american blues deville PCB construction, didn't think it was possible.
Best amp EVER.

It sounds like you need one of Arjay's amps, a Spankmaster Reverb!

I rather like my DRRI also, in spite of the trem tick. I don't use the trem anyway. Never had any other problems beside that. Mine is a 2010 model. There's been a number of complaints on the forum recently about the newer ones though.

I agree. DRRI is the way to go. At least the jacks and tube sockets aren't mounted to the board. They sound great and are legendary in a good way. Actually, you couldn't go wrong with a SF Deluxe Reverb. Hand wired goodness. Fender has been taking some serious shortcuts lately. They could come out with a HRDlx XII and I still wouldn't trust them.

Not any more -- my DRRI head + 15 is exactly what I've been looking for. By the way, I posted the last one under the username "51Preissue" because I was unable to log on the the forums with this one on my laptop -- now I'm back on my desktop and I was permanently logged on as "lpdeluxe1.)
