Hi all,
How well does the "headphone out" work on the Frontman 25R? It has a 1/4-inch jack...does anyone have a recommendation for headphones?

Also, I have seen different models. Some have the Blackface look with a traditional Fender logo (current catalogue) ...while others have different logo with a triangle shape and an open mesh grill rather than a cloth. Are these different amps?

IIRC the perforated metal grill was used on the early editions of the Frontman line, later to be replaced with the traditional blackface motif.

Pretty much any studio quality headphones will work just fine. I have a set of Epiphones I like, though they are no longer available.

I tried to purchase a Frontman 25R today, and the Music shop was unable to place an order to Fender. It appears the Frontman may be discontinued.... :| Is that true?

Sooo...what to do? The Champions Line is possible. I have tried the Mustang 1, and didn't bond with it. Interestingly the Mustang misadventure took me down the Vintage tube amp road...so not all bad. Seems like there are plenty of used 25R's around so not all is lost.

I would prefer the 1/4 inch jack for the headphones.

Looked at a little Yamaha head/gadget thing that looked interesting as well.

If it doesn't have a power tube in the circuit...I'm not that interested

Yes, the Frontman line is discontinued.

The Champion line has a more traditional feel than the Mustangs, but has some digital effects. You have no ability to save presets, but it is easier to dial in your tone on Champion. Champion does NOT use Fuse.

Sorry, but the headphone jack is 3.5 mm. You could use a 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter, of course.

Thanks for confirming. Seems like there are plenty of used around.

I've both a Champion 110 and a Fender Reverb Amp which are predecessors of the Frontman 25R and 15R respectively.

I find that using headphones with these amps result in rather flat tones. You are basically missing the dynamics of the speaker itself. I used both a mid-range Sennheiser headphone and a regular iPod-style headphone.

YMMV

Thanks Bluesky. Between the two amps, do you have a preference? I expect the tone to be limited by the headphone so I'll be looking for something good there also. And a long cord.

I recall you also tried the Weber dummy load with headphones. How did that compare?

It really doesn't matter - jack size makes no difference to sound quality, and if you already have 1/4 plug phones, you can get an adaptor for an amp that has a smaller jack.

Guitar amps aren't hi fi gear and only produce a narrow range of frequencies, if anything, a good headphone will be limited in producing what its capable of, by the amp. That should be apparent when playing any recorded music through them. Any half decent comfy headphones will suffice for amp practice.
