I recently switched from using mostly my tube amps to using the Mustang line including buying an amp and the Mustang Floor. So I resurrected my old solid state Fender Princeton Chorus which sounds great with my Floor and it has a true stereo chorus circuit utilizing two 25-watt power amplifiers with two 10" speakers.

I have a couple of bad input jacks connected to the PCB board. One is for input 1 and one is for a foot switch. I took this circuit board completely out of the amp which was more than I bargained for and am at a lost on how to remove the 9 pins of solder and solder the new one on input 1 and remove the solder and solder the 4 pins for the foot switch jack.

I have been all over the net searching how one does this. I have every imaginable tool for soldering but have never taken on a circuit board task.

Yes, I know this amp input jack design is horrid (keeps everything cheaper to buy) and i have had a jack replaced many years ago from a qualified repair artist. I would like to keep this baby since it has been in the family so long and sounds really good with the Mustang Floor.

Thoughts, comments, links, anything? A carrot?

Just to start you off, as there will be more detailed replies, but you need something called a solder sucker. you heat up each soldered contact one at a time and then use the solder sucker to 'suck' the molten solder off the plated thru hole or pad. when all soldered contacts have been cleaned of solder, the component can be removed with a bit of wiggling.

Solder wick may also be used in hard-to-access areas. Dip it in some flux paste prior to use to reduce the time needed to heat the solder to a molten state.

Solder sucker, solder wick, both good methods. You might also consider getting a desoldering iron. First though, I would check to see if you simply have bad solder joints for the jacks on the PCB, use a magnifier for a good look. If the joints are cracked, which is more common than the jacks themselves being bad, you can reheat the joints and flow some fresh solder, making the joints as good as new.

Definitely worth a look-see......and if it's so, it's a helluva lot easier than wrestling with those POS/PCB's.

A solder sucker, who would have thunk. Thank you!

Thanks for the heads up.

Both jacks were working but the metal on input one was gone and the foot switch input totally loose. Thanks much!

Here's the desoldering iron I use. It comes in handy when I mod some of my pedals too. works really well.

Cool, and thanks for the tip! Picked one up today and waiting on a Fender part to complete the repair.

I hope I am not too late for this but I have corrected this problem a thousand times and PLEASE TRY FIRST before you disassemble and de-solder more. 99% of the time this can be corrected without component replacement.

Jacks don't go bad. What happens is the solders break at the circuit board because of normal use, wriggling a cable in and out of that hole and you end up with a broken connection cold solder cracked joints. Reheat the existing while adding new solder where the jack or other component meets the PCB. 99% of the time this will correct the problem without component replacement. If you desolder etc, you stand a very good chance of ruining traces, hence the entire board and amp.

Actually I would replace them with Switchcraft Jacks. The problem is the jacks are cheap and easily broken. Here's a link on how the repair all kinds of HRDlx stuff.

What I always do is wrap my cord around the handle so it makes it a bit harder to yank on the jack and damage.

My jacks were bad...cracked, stripped, etc. I got my parts delivered yesterday via Fedex smart post from Fender. Used my new desoldering gun to remove old jacks and then soldered the 9 pin input jack and the 4 pin foot switch jack into the PCB board without what looked like any damage. I had broken a reverb tank feed off the mainboard and resoldered that as well.

I then put everything back together with a whole bunch of wires along with dozens of screws, washers, knobs and what have you.

I then went to turn it on. Nada, nothing, zilch, and then realized the power strip was turned off. :)

Everything tested out perfectly and this DIY experience turned for the good. Whew, and thanks everyone.

HIO, good news to hear! You know, that power strip was always on. Some gremlin sneaked in & hit the switch when you weren't looking! :D

Happens to me, all the time. I've rigged a camera to watch the switches. Haven't caught the little guy, yet.
