since the speaker out is a separate jack, unlike the hot rod series, does the combo speaker continue play when a cab is connected?

Yes.

However, if the internal speaker is disconnected and its corresponding jack does not have a plug inserted in it, the extension jack will not function.

This sounds like a perfect setup. Of course for safety a speaker needs connected to int jack.

BUT -- the fender manual says that the way to use these jacks is to disconnect the built in speaker and plug in two cabs.

Hoping that it also works as the reply above. :D

That will work fine. The key is, *something* must be plugged into the main speaker jack before the extension speaker jack will function. When a single speaker (or cabinet) is used, connect it to the main speaker jack. If a second speaker load is added, plug it into the extension speaker jack.

So two or three setups possible. My main interest is that to have two speakers going, why waste the built in? Thus leave the combo speaker plugged into INT and add a single cab to EXT. Poifect.
