I bought a Super Sonic 22 from zzounds last week. When it arrived today, it had numerous issues, even after testing all the tubes.

It loses volume, lower end randomly. It also develops screeching noises, crackles, whistles. etc. on all modes and channels. It seems to quiet down after awhile, but then will go through a period where it does it a lot more. RMA is the only way for me now.

If I get the second one in and it is a dud too, should I bother? I've heard of issues with these amps, but a lot of people say they are fine these days.

If I go for something else, is there any other amp with glassy Fender cleans and a great, flexible overdrive/distortion channel that can also do hi-gain if I need it to do it?

Fender's warranty is the best. If you like the SS22's tone, then why not?

Just doesn't really give me assurance that this is an amp that will last a long time! Especially will all the reported issues.

Fender really bungled this. It's easily the best amp in their lineup for people who need more modern tones but love their clean tone.

Are you in the US? If so the warranty is five years.

I have had three amps replaced under warranty by Fender. Fender has the tone I want and I know if something goes wrong Fender will stand behind their product.

Why are you even bothering to ask the question? Sounds like you have made up your mind already.

No offense, but that sounds kind of like a fool's errand to me. Three strikes and they would be out. That's why I build all my own amps now.

The '68 Deluxe Reverb might be a good candidate for your requirements, unless you want an effects loop. As far as higher gain there's always pedals.

Are you talking an actual '68? Yeah. That is the option after this most likely, with a blackface mod.

However, pedal gain cannot compete with amp gain, especially if you are looking for that boogie sound - which is what the super sonic nails in a very Fender-esque way!

Looks like we've got some Fender fanboys in this thread that think its acceptable for a product to have so many issues, even new. It isn't. That's why I think I'm only going to give it one more shot, and if this amp is bad out of the box, mojjett's thoughts will be very present in my searches.

WTH does this mean?

All 1968 Deluxe Reverbs built prior to August of that year ARE blackfaces where it counts......in the circuitry.

Your post is a bit rude, but I assumed that the 68' had already changed over to post-CBS circuits. I guess that's the 69s.

Just got off the phone with Fender Support. This is what they had to say about the Super Sonic 22:

1. No more problems than other Fender PCB amplifiers. There are some noise problems, but most of those are due to older models exhibiting problems.

2. It may be discontinued in the coming months due to poor sales. The SS 100 has already been discontinued.

3. Fender has service centers it can be serviced it if it ever does develop problems. The guy I talked to ( Brad) said they'd stand behind their product.

Your assumption is based upon ignorance.

If you take the time to study Leo Fender's system of nomenclature post-1963 you'll determine that the first numeral in a circuit designation is the month in which the revision was approved for production and the last two digits are the year. Thus, "AB763" indicates a design dating to July of 1963. If you care to delve further you'll discover that most amps underwent several alterations over the course of their production runs resulting in additional designations. In the case of the Deluxe Reverb, this routine change occurred in August of 1968, with the revision labeled as "AB868". The silverface cosmetics became a hallmark for model year 1968 but amps so restyled first appeared in the spring of 1967. Thus it's entirely possible (nigh likely) to encounter a silverface Deluxe Reverb with totally original-and-authentic blackface innards. The key to identifying these amps is determined by when it was made. Many of us here have such amps. Regardless, the AB868 Deluxe Reverb displayed only minimal changes from the previous blackface circuit, none of which affected its tone to any appreciable significance.

Class dismissed.

Feel free to impale yourself on a "marital aid", pal.

Arjay's the kind of guy that would risk injury to pull you out of a fire...then beat the hell out of you for getting yourself in the fire.
