Hey guys,

I've been interested in getting dubby spring reverb tones playing drums live with my band and new spring reverb gadgets are very expensive, so as I have a surplus fender champion 110 laying around collecting dust, I thought it might be fun to see if I could mod it to achieve this tone and hook it up on an aux send from the mixer on stage…

What needs to be done is mod the amp to output 100% wet reverb - ONLY the reverb and not the dry guitar tone. IE disconnect the main audio pathway after it has sent to the spring circuit and before it gets sent to the power amp circuit.

Any ideas what I can unsolder on the PCB to achieve this, and if it is actually easily achievable without creating dodgy imbalances in the circuitry??

I can solder but am not an electronic pro!

Look forwards to any suggestions!

:o

Try disconnecting R37 or C23.

Hi kronier,

R37 and C23 are in parallel with the reverb circuit, so if you disconnect either of them, the reverb will be overloaded, plus you are still using the entire amp, not just the reverb.

It will not be easy to convert the amp into a "reverb only" device. You will have to reroute some circuits, possibly lifting one side of some components, running wires to connect components, and/or cutting traces to bypass much of the amp circuit. Then modify the circuits existing components to match the input and output impedance of the reverb circuit, and add some components to the reverb output to drive the mixer or device connected to the output.

It certainly won't be as simple as un-soldering a few components.

Sell the amp, then spend the money from the amp sale and get a reverb pedal, or if you really want to solder, get a kit.

If you simply want some reverb sounds, connect an output of the mixer into the amp input and leave the amp on the clean channel and use it as-is.

Seems to me that disconnecting R37/C23 does exactly what the OP wants to do. Plug a drum mike into the amp input. Headphone out could be used to feed the mixer. I don't get your point about the reverb being overloaded or see the need for major mods like you imply. Crude? Yes. Will it work? Probably. Will it sound good? I doubt it. I never said it was a good idea. In fact, I think it is a dumb idea, but certainly easy to implement and see what happens.

Maybe I misunderstood, the OP mentioned a "reverb gadget", as if he wanted a reverb affect without an amp. Or, wanted an amp beside the drums to produce some sound with reverb, only using the send from the mixer. :?: (not sure how the drums fit in the situation)

In any event, the reverb is parallel to R37 and C23, designed to split the signal, and disconnecting the parallel path means a much higher signal level going to the reverb op-amp input. At a minimum, I would expect uncontrolled feedback.

Hey, it's not my amp, go ahead and disconnect components and see what happens. :|

Hey guys

Thanks for your responses. I went right ahead and cut the resistor late last night aftee just seeing the first post and it sounded great, exactly what I wanted!

Although you can hear the signal is going in hot, you can turn down the clean gain to sort that out....

So dont see any real problems other than some technical impedance imbalance that is going to blow the amp up??? But I not then its great actually!

Selling the amp will get me 20 € and a good spring reverb rack unit is around 250 € second hand.

Good deal. What was the matter with using it the way it was?

The reverb must ve 100% wet otherwise its not a reverb send and cant be used effectively on an aux for dub like manual automation, its more of the original signal mixed in which ruins the effect
