+ add the 1 x 12" Cabinet of your choice. Just makes for 2 lighter trips whenever you want to move it and you don't sacrifice the sound you want.

Yeah Abutcher, you've opened a great can of worms!! I got a couple of years on you, so advice comes easy. IMO the signature sound and response of the "Classic Fender Tube" amps are great starting points for any musician(but cost-wise not reasonable). Each of these amps will sound a little different(within their model group), for various reasons. But the real thing is the player, guitar and amp!!! ie. My old Fernandes Tele(with a Gibson PU) through a 1955 Valco-5watt amp is a slide player's rocking chair. Witness, Ry Cooder playing a Danelectro through a 1949 "Charlie Christain " amp. It doesn't matter to me which guitar or amp. The amp is just a starting point(vintage reference). And each of us know the sound that works. Tubes or not, test every amp you can get your hands on!!!! Keep Pickin' !!!! Art

I guess as the last reply says it isn 't just about the equipment. I remember Dave Gilmour's technician saying it was all in his hands. I suppose we all would like to be able to create "that tone" out of the box! Just listening to the YouTube videos on the Mustang they really do take some beating for those of us who are just playing a few gigs and enjoying our music at home but I have a feeling that before I get too old I would love to own a Deluxe or a Princeton again. The Princeton looks a useful option. I had a Supersonic 22 which was a great amp but parted with it because of the weight.

I will certainly check out the head and cabinet option. The Hughes and Kettners sound good. Anybody any experience of them? I find it hard to move away from a Fender though. Tried a Les Paul again recently but not for me against a Deluxe HSS Strat.

As long as we've mentioned the Mustang, I'll ask about the Cyber Twin. How close is the Deluxe Reberb on this compared to the real thing?

Just checked out Shane Diiorio's shoot out between the Deluxe Reverb and the Mustang III . The Mustang sounded great, maybe I am worrying unnecessarily! The only thing I found before was in a live situation against a Marshall it wouldn't cut it and that's what took me to a Supersonic. That was a great amp but should have gone for the Deluxe then. I have decided to be content with the Mustang III but thanks for your posts.

I have the Tubemeister 5 and love it. Great for my bedroom on a small cabinet with the red box plugged into my lexicon to record or play silently. I have other tube amps for "live' situations. My tubemiester has replaced my mustang l as my private amp.

A Deluxe Reverb is the "Classic Fender Tone" and nothing is quite like it. I've built a Tweed Deluxe clone that is very light weight. It has a pine cabinet and is very resonant. I'm 58, but really don't have any serious health problems. I can carry the Tweed and guitar at the same time with no problems. I'm not sure of the total weight. But my guess would be around 30-35 lbs.The Tweed Deluxe 5e3 is a different species. Not a ton of headroom but enough and so many tonal possibilities I rarely use a pedal with it. I also have an Egnater Rebel 20 that is a twenty watt head that weighs in at sixteen pounds. Very versatile amp. The cab is another 28 lbs. I've never found a modeling amp that I can live with. They seem to lack the dynamics and feel of a real tube amp. You could possibly add casters. I wouldn't use a road case in your situation because of the added weight factor.

Princeton's and older Champ Amps are very light weight and sound amazing too. If you have decent soldering skills, building your own is a really inexpensive way to go.

There are a number of excellent presets available on the Fender Fuse website that faithfully recreate that 65 Deluxe Reverb sound. Some for a bit of country twang and others for the blues. Just takes a bit of time digging around. Although I'm 66 and have a 65 DRRI and a Twin Reverb RI in a Mojo head cabinet, I also have two Mustang III V2s that I love. Drooling over the Super Sonics, but the Mustangs can emulate the burn channel very faithfully, as well. Good Luck :o)

Addendum: After posting this I noted where you said something about micing your MIII. If it's a V2, at least, you have XLR outs that can go direct to a sound board for recording or putting into a PA.

I've never found them even close. They are what they are. It has nothing to do with tube snobbery, old vs new, brand loyalty etc. It has to do with reference points of amps I own or have owned in the past. I'm not saying they sound horrible, but to state that they faithfully reproduce these amps it a serious stretch. Not trying to start an argument just stating my experience. Play them side by side and the difference is obvious. I've played through and have owned some really nice solid state amps. Peavey Trans Tube amps were pretty nice.

I cannot comment on the 65 Reverb, but I am thrilled with what I am getting out of the '59 Bassman. It has taken months of drilling down to the finer adjustments but this thing really has the gutsy "tube" I have been after years.

Some guys swear by the presets available online, but I have as yet to find one useable. Most of them, particularly those of Guitarist Who Shall Not Be Named, consist of cranking gain and volume to ten. Playing a hollow body guitar these thing scream with feedback.

Regardless, a guitarist with a good ear should be able to take a classic model and shape some good tone. The 59 Bassman with 4x12g speaker emulation blended 70% bright channel with gain at 4 makes for great sounding Freddy King. The bias and sag setting greatly impact how the amp distorts with different attacks.

Yeah Bill, I'm not saying you can't get good sounds out of them. The presets are horrible on these things. Most are full of over the top gain and kazoo tone. I know some players who can get decent sounds out of the Mustangs and they do take a lot of work to get something good. I also work with guys who make a GDec 30 soung decent. I have one and turned all the effects off and use it with a iPod with backing tracks. The presets on that thing are geared for 12 year olds and are so noisey they're useless. As long as you get what you want from them is all that really counts. My 5e3 clone is pretty much plug and play and really simple to get great sounds. I borrow a friends 59 Bassman 410 Reissue from time to time for larger gigs and it's an amazing amp that's really easy to dial in. Glad you had success with your rig.

Thanks.

I will admit that am hoping to build a tube kit this year. Probably from MojoTone. I just need to see what fits my budget. Their Bassman looks really nice.

Will the tube amp from a kit become my main amp? I kind of doubt it, but who knows?

I've built a couple. One's just a 5 watter that was built true point to point with no turret board just a couple of terminal strips for support. It comes from Mod Kits DIY. Sounds great. I've also built some true PTP pedals from them too. My 5e3 came from Tube Depot. It's built with a PCB. The board is mill spec, wide traces, double sided with plated through holes, the parts are high quality, the tube sockets and all controls are chassis mounted and it's pretty loud for a 5e3. It runs a GZ34 rectifier tube with 6V6 power tubes and 12ax7 preamp tubes and Classic Tone transformers. Rob Hull, the guy who designed the board told me it runs pretty close to 18 watts. I put a Weber 12A125A Alnico speaker in it and it sounds amazing. I gig with it all the time now and it has been rock solid reliable and is one of my favorite amps.

I have a drri and like it a lot.. I also have a tweaker 15 head and a 1 x12 cab with a stock bdri speaker in it and I use it a lot for a grab and go rig when I don't want to drag my spendy amps out.. The tweaker has an effects loop that works good with my boss looper pedal, lower noise than all of my tube fender amps.

I also have a mustang v v.2 that I hook up to a 2 x 12 with 16ohm texas heats. I have ab'd it against all of my tube amps and made presets that sound close enough to my liking that I have jammed with it in a couple of live jams. It does not like my overdrive pedals as much as my tube amps do though. But I have got an old rat pedal to work pretty good with it...

As far as tonewise though, the drri has got the mojo, just plug and play. I don't think it is that heavy, my blues deville 410 is heavy. Maybe get a drri head and a 1 x 12 cab. For a budget I think the egnater tweaker 15 head or the 40 head are pretty good amps and a 1 x 12 cab or 2 x 12 gives a little flexibility. I really like my tweaker and it has not left me silent, yet....
