The sound I really love is the Deluxe Reverb but....if is so heavy I changed to a Mustang III. The Mustang is great value and so light but.....and it might be my ears, it seems to change, sometimes it sounds great, sometimes not so great and of course never quite as good as the real thing. Any suggestions of how I can get near to a Deluxe Reverb sound without breaking my ageing back?

deluxe re-verbs are pretty light, try lifting a twin reverb or super reverb, and I think you will agree the deluxe is an easy mover.......

It is simply not yet possible to recreate the all tube sound with modeling (so far) although some amp brands have come pretty close.

This guy demos an excellent DR 'patch' for the Mustang III. The setting can also be downloaded.

I would appreciate intelligent and constructive replies not some of what I have seen so far. I am 60 and have arthritis in my hip knees and back. That does not stop me enjoying playing but it does make lifting heavy objects difficult. Hence I have given up on heavy P A systems and gone down the Bose route.

Thanks for the link to In the Blues. I like this guy.

A Priceton Reverb would be a little lighter. My PR clone has a 12" alnico and excellent tone. But remember, tube amps are a bit heavier than solid state amps, by virtue of their larger transformers and the requisite components. Another consideration is the cabinet . Pine is lighter than the MFD used in cheaper amps. Art

If this answer is for me , let me tell you that I did not want to be rude or insult you. I did not know the health problems you have and I do not think I read that you mentioned them.

I just read that the Deluxe Reverb was too much heavy .

I use a Mustang I. Not only do I appreciate the light weight but I could not justify the expense of a nice tube amp when the modeling amps are so close.

I put a mic on the amp and use the amp purely as a monitor. It works well and it's only 17lbs and I got it used for $60. Why on Earth would I spend hundreds or possibly over $1000 for a tube amp? The tube amp might sound better but it ain't that much better - not even close.

Mhowell, makes a valid point !!! If you don't require a tube amp, a decent modeling amp should fill the bill. My tube amp weighs-38lb. Art

I am a slightly reformed tube snob. I am very happy with the tube tonality of my MIV with the '59 Bassman model tweaked in while using the 4x12G speaker emulation. It sounds much better than my USA made Blues Delux e.

My Mustang Mini ain't too bad either. Granted it does not really sound like a tube amp, but it blows away any battery powered amp I have ever heard. If you do not want to schlep around a heavy amp, any of the Mustang line should do the job and inexpensively. Just spend some time in the Advanced Amp Tab in Fuse to fine tune the modeling.

Welcome to your "golden years", sonny.

I'm in the same boat -- osteoarthritis in both hips, and my L6/7 spinal region plus both knees shot (too many jumps in Uncle Sam's Parachute Club). But I won't and don't let it keep me from my beloved guitar tone.

You asked a simple question ("Anything as good as the Deluxe Reverb?") so here's the simple answer.

"No".

You may squabble over and debate the relative sonic merits of the various contemporary modeling fizz-boxes but that's the bottom line.

Useful thoughts thank you. The Mustang range is incredible value for money and I will try miking. Bottom line I suppose as has been said is there is nothing quite like the Deluxe Reverb and anything else is a compromise but taking into account the extra weight and extra cash it's a hard decision.

Hope my previous comments didn't come across as disparaging the classic amps from Fender's past. I love them and I honestly don't believe they've been eclipsed by anything with respect to great tone. Those old amps are also second to none when it comes to road worthy reliability (provided they're properly maintained). A Mustang, particularly the I and II, is disposable papier-mâché by comparison.

Another major disclaimer: I am NOT a professional musician!

You could try a small head and a cab. My joints won't allow heavy lifting anymore, and heavy is relative. I have a 45 lb amp that I just leave in one place and don't try to move it. I can move it, but I want to save what I have left. Tube tone is best by far in my experience. Good luck in your search. :D
