The choke dates to the 48th week of 1960 and the output tranny has the correct P/N for a 5F6-A. However, the latter looks much newer than what is commonly found in production tweed Bassmans -- almost as if it were a tranny for a 6G6 that had been re-stamped with a '50s-era part number.

Well, Fender was known for making undocumented changes. The presence pot change is undocumented except for the testimony of a 5F6A Bassman expert on TGP that I chatted with while building my clone. The OP's amp definitely has the early configuration presence pot. :D

Indeed. And Leo was, if nothing else, frugal -- he never threw anything away. I think the amp is exactly as conjectured by the OP; an undocumented example of a "shop amp", built by FEIC's technicians and kept at Fullerton for general use.

I saw something similar to this on Ebay last night -- a 5E3 chassis mounted in a tweed Tremolux cabinet. It looked to be all original, with some specific non-standard mods that could only have been done at the factory.

That aluminum pan on the right of the photo is the cover for the main power supply filter caps. You should remove this cover and inspect the caps, before any heavy duty use of the amp. These caps often need replacing, before the amp's can be deemed road-worthy.

Nice amp. These things are near Holy Grails of the guitar amp world. Nice restoration of the tweed covering and the cab.

The cab is, relatively speaking, brand new.

Arjay,

Yeah, nice job. Can you buy those cab already made? Or do they send you the tolex and shellac and the cab, either already made of in parts?

How much do these things cost?

Thanks!
