It's amazing how much time we all spend trying to help people with loud amps that want them to be not so loud.

Get a smaller amp for-crying-out-loud! That's what we do.

I have a 5751 in VI and 5881 tubes for power because they have a lower power rating. Roughly a 25% decrease in output power. Not to mention, TS 5881's have a really good guitar tone. My volume has decreased enough for me to enjoy it.

Sure not 70% to 50% lower volume as wrvond want . And it change tone of the amp , less overdrive .

Understood. A customized amp is a personal taste. :D I think I got lucky because TS 5881's seem to be a very sweet toned batch. I am really happy with the normal channel of this amp now. Drive is an experimental channel for me. My guitar player doesn't use it either.

I just turn the volume down on the guitar. 8)

Even my 5 watt Champion 600 can get pretty darn loud when the amp and guitar are cranked.

Hmmm, and here I thought that the guitar knobs were just decorations. I'll have to try this "turn the volume down on the guitar" thing of which you speak.

Hello,I'd like to reduce the output by 50 - 70% without adversely affecting reliability. And I would prefer not to have to alter bias settings.

Get a volume box and put it in the effects loop I have one and it works great.

But changing the output tubes would require setting bias, right? Something I could do, but prefer not to mess with.

Sure if you use 6V6 , always need a bias check with any new 6L6 too

It sounds like the consensus is that a GE 5751 will give me the greatest change with the least input.
What consensus ? This preamp tube have less gain than 12AX7, but this won't reduce your output power like you want . A speaker Attenuator is the only and easiest way and it is a good invest if you want to crank your amp with a low volume .
Thanks.

I tried the GE 5751 ... didn't work worth talking about.

Try my configuration which I just posted to the same problem. It's a very inexpensive fix.

Always wondered if speakers like the emmy reignmaker would be an (expensive) alternative.
