Hello everybody,

I have recently replaced the old almost-dead speaker or my 1992 made Fender Stage 112SE amp. I now have a weird noise problem especially when the bass pot of the EQ is turned up more than 1/4. When I turn down the bass, the noise is gone. Also no noise when not playing. It's not hum or a similar voltage related noise, it's more like the diaphram of the speaker is hitting somewhere as it vibrates, but I could not see anything.

Please listen to this recording: https://soundcloud.com/yusuf-torun/amp-noise-ish

You can hear the noise between 00:03 - 00:10. After 00:10 I turn down the bass pot, and the noise is gone.
Can someone help me identify the problem?

Thank you, have a nice day.

What replacement speaker did you install?

Hi,

The original speaker was: Fender Special Design 12”, 8 ohm (P/N 026488)
I replaced it with: Celestion Hot 100, 8 Ohm (G 12 T-100)

Thank you.

If the replacement speaker is in proper operating condition then that's likely not the root of the problem. Celestion's G12T-100 is what Fender installed in the Stage 100 DSP, quite similar to your Stage 112SE.

Have you checked that all screws and fasteners inside the cabinet and chassis are snug? Speaker screws?

Did you happen to put the original back in it and see if it still makes the noise?

Hi,
I don't have the amp at home, I won't be able to check it until next week but I am pretty sure there are no loose screws etc.
I will install the old speaker to see if it makes the same noise, but until then, do you think the preamp circuit can cause such a noise or do you think it is speaker related?

I guess I won't know until I install the old speaker back :/

Could always be a defective speaker - unusual, but stranger things have happened.

Good luck!

If the cone or spider show no damage, my bet is the speaker voice coil rubbing against the magnet gap.

Hello again, and thanks for your responses.

I have finally had the chance to test the old speaker, unfortunately I still have the same noise.

A little more detail about the problem:

- There is no noise when I don't play or play quietly, but when I hit the strings hard, the noise starts. Higher the volume, more the noise.
- Both clean and the drive channels have the same problem.
- Line Out also has the same problem.

The first recording was thru my phone mic, here's a new one, recorded direclty from the line out of the amp, no enviromental/background noises: https://soundcloud.com/yusuf-torun/ampnoise2

I have also removed the amp "head?" to see if there's anything burnt, broken, any cable misplaced etc, but so far I haven't found anything.

Please let me know what you think.
Thank you.
