Hi,

I'm quite new to the Fender Lounge, hoping you won't be pissed off if I start asking questions.
Back on the guitar after a 10 years break, I'm playing on a US Strat + Blues Deluxe Reissue. Mainly, almost only blues (Buddy Guy ...).
I'm considering changing the BDRI stock speaker for a Jensen P12N (heard that one recently and fell in love with it).
I checked the specs to see it this speaker would physically fit. Sounds ok, but people warned me that NO IT WON'T FIT (2 centimeters).
I'm a bit lost today, I have 50/50 pros and cons and can't find a definitive and relevant information on the web.

Anyone here to tell me if the Jensen P12N is a viable choice for my Blues Deluxe Reissue ?

Many thanks

Vincent (from France, yes ...I know ...).

2 centimeters in which dimension?

Without the bell on it, the Jensen is greater in depth but the magnet is smaller in diameter than the Cannibis Rex in my BDRI.

Hi Bluesky,

Thanks for your answer.
I already learned so much thanks to your articles about the BDRI. I have the same valve configuration as you !
I'm your devoted follower.

Dimensions : I was thinking about depth and this bell story made a "bing" in my head : the C12N fits ok WITHOUT the bell, but don't fit WITH the bell.

I believe I ll have to go with a "no bell" P12N setup. Still can't imagine the bell purpose, is it really important ?

Regarding your amp, nice setup.
You put great attention to your lead dress it seems. I also did that and removed the hum.

What about the Cannabis Rex ? You quoted Clapton, Hendrix and BB as your favs. These are also mine, so I guess the Cannabis Rex could be an interesting option for me as well ?

The CR has a very smooth tone with great bass that is perfect for blues. You can read more about speaker selection in my thread here:

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=80142

The bell is just for appearances (the original P12N had a different magnet configuration) and has no effect on tone. In the 5F6A Bassman clone I built, two speakers use a bell and two do not (for clearance purposes).

I should think that for your type of music the P12N would be ideal. The presence of the magnet cover is of no import -- it adds no functionality to the speaker's tone. Allow the speaker adequate break-in time (40 to 50 hours) and it should be a significant sonic upgrade to the OEM Eminence driver.

Do you think a P12N can handle that amp over time if your pushing 40 watts even more so if you use an od pedal?

I know they are rated @50 watts.I would worry I would blow it. But I play loud and YMMV if your not going to push it hard.

The Cannabis Rex is only rated at 50 watts and it has no problem handling a cranked BDRI and guitar. 8)

Note the "music Power" rating for the Jensen. This is more realistic. "Rated" power is usually done using pink noise which gives a speaker no chance to "rest" and cool off.

i have one in my bdri. the only thing is you can't use the bell, as others said it dosen't matter. the break in time is around what was stated earlier although it just keeps on getting better. another good choice along the same lines is the p12q. i understand they tend to get more speaker breakup and tend to tame the bass freqs a bit.

The "Q" coil is only rated for thirty watts. I predict an abnormally-short service life if driven hard for sustained periods in a BDRI.

The fine line between where a speaker breaks up and where it just plain *breaks* is this close......><

Hi,

Thanks for all your messages.
I see clearer now.

Here is my plan :
- Follow BlueSky and buy a Cannabis Rex and test it for 2 months,
- Follow Retroverbial and buy a P12N (my initial desire) and test it for 2 months.

Then, make a choice ... OR build a second BDRI and use both. If my lucky, my wife won't notice there's another amp along with the Marshalls and Vox....

BlueSky, your Bassman clone is just gorgeous. Awesome job.

I play both my 5F6A Bassman clone and my Trainwreck Express clone together all the time.
