Hi Everyone,
Seems like there is a lot of good insight on this forum, maybe you all can help.
I got a Hot Rod Deluxe III brand new, opened the box played for about 15 minutes, no problems, sounded great. Later that day, hooked up all my gear to really try it out. Plugged in the footswitch, ran my TC Nova Delay in the effects loop, and after about ten minutes started smelling smoke. Unplugged everything immediately. Took the back panel off, and didn't see anything burnt. Tried it again, and after about ten minutes smoke came shooting out from C42 (small gray capacitor just above the power tubes). Sent it back for an exchange. My question is, is this a common issue, or did I do something wrong? I should be able to hook up a delay pedal in the effects loop right? I am pretty sure the cap that blew had something to do with either the footswitch or effects loop.

Did I just get a lemon?

Hi stolt777,

This is the first one that I've heard of on this forum that actually let the factory smoke out of it. Although it happens, it's certainly not common, quite rare in fact.

C42 is a filter for the -16 volt supply, used for three op amps for channel switching, reverb, and the effects loop. Did you have something hooked up wrong? Maybe, maybe not, who knows. But returning the amp was the right call.

Maybe you could give details as to exactly how you had everything hooked up, foot switch, effects, etc.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.

Yeah I was pretty surprised. I had plugged the footswitch in to its jack, then hooked a cable up from the pre-amp out to the mono input of my Nova Delay, then from the mono output of the pedal to the power amp in jack on the amp. That was the only pedal in the chain. The pedal seems to function as it should with my other amp (plugged straight in to an Epiphone Valve Junior)

I also THINK I noticed a slight change in the tone of the amp, being more harsh on the drive channel and overly touchy/sensitive, but that could have been my imagination.

I just want to make sure its not something I was unaware of like "Oh never plug a regular stomp box in to your effects loop on a HRD".
