So, I traded for an excelsior amp that appeared to be in new condition. I think it's an older one like 2010 or 12. Not sure how to tell. It's the brown one.

It was working fine and I used it for a rehearsal. then the next day, i turned it on to play it and it worked fine. I shut it down and came back later to play it again. I turned it on and nothing. Not even the top power light. I checked the fuse and it looks fine. none of the tubes light up. When I switch it on I can hear a very very faint power hum. So faint that you might miss it if not having your head almost in the back of the cab. Any ideas?

I am a newbie to tubes. If one tube goes, do all the tubes not work? Or would that make the top power light not even come on?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Milton555,

You really should check the fuse with a meter to be sure, looks can be deceiving.

Well, no luck there. Changed the fuse and no go. I opened up the chassis to see if there was something obvious there. The heat fuse is fine as well. When I switch it on, there is a tiny bit vibration that feels like power doing something but no lights, no tube glow, no output. I'm wondering if a transformer went bad.

There are three fuses, one external (main), one for the power supply (250 mA), and one for the heaters (7 A). There is also a thermistor (RT1) on the primary of the power transformer that could be bad. If the fuses and thermistor are all good, you might have to check the circuits. If a fuse is blown, there is likely a reason that needs to be investigated. Can you read a schematic and use a meter?
