Hi all..I am new to the forum..here goes.

I have a HRD3 that I got a few months back and play a Strat Plus with gold lace sensor pick ups. I have noticed that when I turn the volume up on the clean channel above 3 and have my guitar volume at 10 the amp sounds muddy and sort of overdriven. chords become very punchy for lack of a better term and basically sound just awful.

The amp sounds pristine at low volume but whenever I get it up to gigging volume the clean channel sounds awful. Pedals all sound fine but I cant get the clean tone I want at high volumes. Dropping my guitar volume seems to help a little so I am wondering if this is a guitar amp combo thing and not anything inherent in the amp. Unfortunately I dont have another electric to play around with.

Any thoughts?

At higher volume levels you need to cut the bass. May need to adjust the other tone controls also.

Thanks for the response...I will play with the tone settings tomorrow when I can crank it up. I do have another related question...I was at a gig a few weeks ago and noticed that after the amp was on for about 2 hours the clean channel volume was dropping out. I had the amp sitting on a chair with the back of the amp covered. I was thinking the tubes were overheating since they couldn't vent off the heat. What do you think?

Maybe. Try it without blocking the back next time.

Not only the tubes ,,,, don't do that , need to be vent .

+1

Tubes can tolerate a certain amount of heat but continuous thermal excesses are not too friendly with the amp's other components.

Check the bias also, as it is likely too cold the way it comes from the factory.
