After you've carried enough 50 and 100 watt amps you might be wanting to join the small amp club. I now use an SCXD and mic it. Everyone in the band loves it cause it is so light and still sounds great.

I've gigged regularly with my HRDx for the past few years but recently replaced it with a Pro Jr. I was using GT Substi-Tube base converters to run EL84 power tubes in the HRDx @ about 22W. It was still too loud since we mic everything onstage - and I mean everything. The Pro Jr works great and last gig I was asked to "turn that screaming little sucker down". Fold a little back through your vocal monitor, you might be surprised how little you can get away with.

Cheers,
- JJ

A used Hot Rod Deluxe is a great answer to the original question. They sound great loud too.

Another possibility is to check with vintage guitar/amp shops. If nothing else, lots of fun if you have one nearby but if not, there are Web sites with pictures, etc. for quite a few.

I picked up a Super 210 at Bernunzio's Vintage Guitars in Rochester, NY last summer while visiting a friend. It's plenty loud enough for me and it was under $500 - $425 to be exact. We also have The Amp Shop here in the San Fernando Valley (LA area) where I live and they sometimes have some great deals too.

You probably won't find a good working order true vintage or classic model for under $500. But something post-1985 in good condition is certainly realistic if you don't mind used. The 210 was sold as "in working order as far as we know," but with the caveat that they were not amp techss. They didn't know the history of it and could only tell me that they'd had it for a couple of months. It was used for people who wanted to try the vintage guitars.
